Public Intelligence Blog: Sepp Hasslberger: Water Desalination with Shock Waves "IndyWatch Feed War"

A new, less complicated method of purifying water of salt and contaminants… could become very useful.

Research team invents efficient shockwave-based process for desalination of water

Now a team at MIT has come up with an innovative approach that, unlike most traditional desalination systems, does not separate ions or water molecules with filters, which can become clogged, or boiling, which consumes great amounts of energy.

Phi Beta Iota: Solar energy for Internet connectivity including free cellular, and solar energy powering water desalination with open source engineering that is affordable and infinitely scalable, are world-changers. This new success by MIT is classic ephemeralism — doing more with less — in the Buckminster Fuller tradition. Eliminating manufactured filters and reducing energy needs is huge.

Your News Wire: EU Official Says Paris Attackers Were Not Refugees "IndyWatch Feed World"

A senior EU official has claimed that every one of the radicals identified so far in Friday’s terrorist attacks in Paris are European Union nationals. The announcement casts even further doubt on the authenticity of a Syrian passport discovered on or near the body of one of the attackers. Uncut reprots: “Let me underline—the profile of the terrorists so far identified tells us this is an internal threat. It is all EU citizens so far. This can change with the hours, but so far it is quite clear it is an issue of internal domestic security,” High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini stated, following a gathering of EU foreign ministers. So far, it appears most of the perpetrators have been tied to France and Belgium, though the investigation is not yet concluded. One Egyptian passport was also found. However, Egypt’s ambassador to France, Ihab Badawi, has claimed that passport belongs to an innocent victim rather than one of the attackers. The discovery of the Syrian passport instilled a fearful backlash across both Europe and the U.S., prompting several officials to insist on suspending their acceptance of Syrian refugees in their regions. Signs of the Times: Information is contagious among social connections "IndyWatch Feed World"

New research using advanced computer modeling sheds light on how behaviors may become "contagious" in large groups, showing that the memory of one individual can indirectly influence that of another via shared social connections. The findings are published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. "In large social networks, our model demonstrated that information is 'contagious' in much the same way that behavior seems to be contagious," say researchers Christian Luhmann and Suparna Rajaram of Stony Brook University. "These results suggest that information transmission is a critical mechanism underlying the social transmission of behavior." While research has shown that various behaviors, including smoking, seem to spread throughout social networks, the mechanisms driving this behavioral contagion remain mysterious. To shed light on these contagious phenomena, Luhmann and Rajaram decided to incorporate well-established cognitive processes into computer models capable of simulating groups much larger than those typically seen in laboratory research. In doing so, they would be able to see how individuals interact, and how information flows, within groups that ranged from two to 500 people.

Signs of the Times: Researchers sequence genomes of parasite that is actually a "micro jellyfish" "IndyWatch Feed World"

Researchers have revealed how a jellyfish -- those commonplace sea pests with stinging tentacles -- have evolved over time into 'really weird' microscopic organisms, made of only a few cells, that live inside other animals. It's a shocking discovery that may redefine how scientists interpret what it means to be an animal. This week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers at the University of Kansas will reveal how a jellyfish -- those commonplace sea pests with stinging tentacles -- have evolved over time into "really weird" microscopic organisms, made of only a few cells, that live inside other animals. Genome sequencing confirms that myxozoans, a diverse group of microscopic parasites that infect invertebrate and vertebrate hosts, are actually are "highly reduced" cnidarians -- the phylum that includes jellyfish, corals and sea anemones. "This is a remarkable case of extreme degeneration of an animal body plan," said Paulyn Cartwright, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at KU and principal investigator on the research project. "First, we confirmed they're cnidarians. Now we need to investigate how they got to be that way."

Nicki Minaj’s former boyfriend Safaree Samuels is suing her for $50 Million and claims he helped his ex-girlfriend, Nicki Minaj, write some of her music, she did not give him due credit for his contribution in her three hugely successful albums. He’s now about to take her to court to get his share of the financial profits.

Samuels claims he has proof to back up his pending lawsuit in the form of witnesses, hours of studio footage, voice memos from recording sessions and video of the two working together.

He’s looking to cash in on his alleged work on Nicki’s studio albums “The Pink Print,” “Pink Friday”and “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.” He also reportedly wants his cut from her singles like “Only,” that featured Chris Brown, Drake and Lil Wayne; “Flawless (Remix)” with Beyonce and “Feeling Myself” with Bey.

Minaj is currently dating rapper Meek Mill, who has been feuding with Drake for months now.

Booman Tribune: Rand Paul's Tough Love "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I'm concerned about the tone:

Earlier in his speech, [Sen. Rand] Paul explained his habit of linking [Sen. Bernie] Sanders to mass exterminations carried out by socialist regimes throughout history.

“People say: ‘Oh, you’re saying that Bernie Sanders is Pol Pot.’ No, I’m saying that he’s embracing the same philosophy of socialism that lead ultimately to the extermination of people,” Paul explained.

“Stalin killed tens of millions of people,” he continued. “They say, ‘Well, Bernie’s not gonna do that.’ Probably not.”

Here's a little refresher on Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge, an organization, like ISIS, that owed its very existence in large part to the disruption caused by a Texan who wanted to prove he had brass balls.

The organization is remembered especially for orchestrating the Cambodian genocide, which resulted from the enforcement of its social engineering policies. Its attempts at agricultural reform led to widespread famine, while its insistence on absolute self-sufficiency, even in the supply of medicine, led to the death of thousands from treatable diseases such as malaria. Arbitrary executions and torture carried out by its cadres against perceived subversive elements, or during purges of its own ranks between 1975 and 1978, are considered to have constituted genocide.

Look, by the standard that Rand Paul set up, I don't have to be fair or even make much sense, so I'll just point out that demanding "absolute self-sufficiency" is a libertarian thing that Pol Pot probably borrowed from the Austrian School. You know, if you can't figure out how to get some quinine, that's just too goddamned bad. Now you're dead. Ha ha!

Or maybe it's a governm...

Booman Tribune: The worst terrorist attack this year "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

... did not happen in Paris on Friday, despite the fact that it was a horrific incident. Yet, though 129 people have been confirmed dead by French authorities - and presumably more will die in the coming days and weeks from the wounds they suffered - the Paris attacks don't even come close to being the worst terrorist incident this year. It only seems like the worst.

However, in January of this year, over a four day period, a terrorist organization likely slaughtered 2,000 people (no precise count was ever taken), dwarfing the casualties in Paris, and, to be honest, every other terrorist attack that happened in the world this year.

Yet, I'll bet few people remember this mass murder of innocent civilians because it was committed by Boko Haram, an Islamist organization committed to using violence to establish an Islamic state, that began January 3rd and ended on January 7th in an isolated area of rural Nigeria near the border with Chad.

District head Baba Abba Hassan said most victims are children, women and elderly people who could not run fast enough when insurgents drove into Baga, firing rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles on town residents.

“The human carnage perpetrated by Boko Haram terrorists in Baga was enormous,” Muhammad Abba Gava, a spokesman for poorly armed civilians in a defence group that fights Boko Haram, told the Associated Press.

An additional 20,000 to 35,000 thousand people fled the area during Boko Haram's assault. Satellite imagery revealed the destruction of 57% of the town of Doko Gowan, the site of a Nigerian military base that was the focus of the initial assault. Of course, this was only the worst of a number of murderous...

President Obama still plans to allow 10,000 Syrian refugees into the country over the next year, despite terrorist attacks in Paris, at top aide said Sunday.

“We’re still planning on taking in Syrian refugees,” White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said on “Fox News Sunday.” “We had very robust vetting procedures for those refugees.”

“There are women and children, orphans of this war, and I think we need to do our [part] along with our allies to provide them a safe haven,” he added.

Bedwetting:

“After full consideration of this weekend’s attacks of terror on innocent citizens in Paris, I will oppose any attempt to relocate Syrian refugees to Alabama through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. As your Governor, I will not stand complicit to a policy that places the citizens of Alabama in harm’s way,” Governor Robert Bentley said...

...“The acts of terror committed over the weekend are a tragic reminder to the world that evil exists and takes the form of terrorists who seek to destroy the basic freedoms we will always fight to preserve. I will not place Alabamians at even the slightest, possible risk of an attack on our people. Please continue to join me in praying for those who have suffered loss and for those who will never allow freedom to fade at the hands of terrorists,” Governor Bentley added.

Booman Tribune: Little Defeats "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The first time I traveled to Paris, I stayed in a little dump of a hotel off the Canal St. Martin. The Place de la Republique and its environs became the first French playground for me and my new wife. When we retuned to the city five years later, it was the first place we visited even though our hotel that time was in a different part of town. I have magical memories of the park and the canal and all the avenues and little side streets leading into them. I can still remember every bar and restaurant we patronized, including the one that had been disappointingly and inexplicably converted into a Tex-Mex restaurant on our return visit.

I know other people have been directly impacted by these attacks. The assault on my memory is a small thing. And, yet, it saddens me.

On Sunday night, the sound of what may have been a firecracker, or a light fixture blowing a circuit breaker at a restaurant near the Place de la Republique, where a vigil was taking place, ignited an extraordinary panic. People stampeded out of restaurants, bars and stores across a two-mile-wide sector of the city as false warnings of gunshots erupted on Twitter. Some dived into news vans. Hotels turned off their lights as employees huddled behind chairs. One woman flung herself into the Canal St. Martin.

“Suddenly people were running and screaming everywhere, going in every direction,” said Omar Zahiri, a 50-year-old lawyer attending the vigil. “I said, ‘Stop running like a crazy person, calm down.’ But they didn’t. They kept running.”

I'd visit the Place de la Republique tomorrow if I could. I'd take my whole family there. It's a wonderfully vibrant place. But, yeah, I'd have to be vigilant, and a firecrac...

Obviously the husband of the officer who died (yes... she was a female) must be confused cause... how can he miss the courage of a creature like Bruce Jenner transiting into a new life form? Jenner John's are going up all over the country now. However, since we don't understand what is going on any better than this fellow does, we'll move on to something else, commiserating for a moment with all of those who lost loved ones in the Israeli orchestrated attacks of 9/11.

Speaking of Israeli orchestrated attacks, let us turn our attention to the recent massacres in Paris and share this interesting tidbit which was mirrored in the 9/11 attacks. What is also mirrored in ALL of the attacks over recent years is that, once again, there was a military exercise taking place on the same day.
If you go to the Crass Media, you find that there are so many slithering lies of duplicitous darkness running across the pages that you can't read them. There is not enough time in the day and there is certainly not enough gullibility (on my part) to wade in the septic swamp of these pustulous prevarications (I'm starting to sound like Spiro Agnew).

WhoWhatWhy: PoppyLeaks, Part 2 "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

With the end of the old Communist system, it seemed that free speech and a diversity of voices would flourish behind the former Iron Curtain. That certainly hasn’t happened in Russia.

Even more troubling, though, is how the corporate media in the United States repeatedly fails to uncover and report the truth about recent American history.

Consider the latest development: the embarrassingly transparent cover-up of George H.W. Bush’s life in his new “authorized biography,” which we wrote about previously. We noted how that book was a witting fantasy because of what it left out. Imagine a book about Richard Nixon’s life that leaves out Watergate.

Displaying a culpable lack of professionalism, the US media establishment has closed ranks around this fantasy of a benign, sometimes bumbling fellow, who somehow rose to the challenge of stopping Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait without getting bogged down in a Middle East quagmire.

Even before the book was released, The New York Times published several articles based on advance excerpts, touting its supposed “revelations.”

And on the same day we published our critique of this fawning charade, the “paper of record” published yet another endorsement, this time an approving book review.

Want to know what corporate-media incest looks like? This approving book review — of a Bush-approving-book authored by a former chief of Newsweek — was written by a former chief of Time, Newsweek’s main “competitor.” In other words, Times gets Time guy to endorse Newsweek guy’s whitewash of Bush.

Disgusting anti-white rhetoric by Black Lives Matter

By Alex Thomas

(INTELLIHUB) — In yet another startling example of the disgusting rhetoric coming from Black Lives Matter, black-clad protesters marched into Dartmouth Hall Thursday, shouting racial epitaphs and harassing anyone who didn’t immediately jump up in support.

The protesters were supposedly there to protest decisions made by the University that they disagreed with as well as to show support for the so-called uprising at the University of Missouri. Instead, the #BLM inspired students made complete asses of themselves while showing the world what they really stand for.

An article about the protests published in the conservative Dartmouth Review details what the Black Lives Matter protesters were actually chanting as well as the sick demands they hurled at random students who were simply at the library to study.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has been quoted as saying that the Paris bombings should make France and other countries understand Israel’s war on Palestinian terror.

Israel tries to reap propaganda benefits from Paris bombings

Jerusalem’s city walls illuminated with colors of French flag

From Khalid Amayreh in Occupied Palestine

As usual in these circumstances, Israel is trying to exploit the Paris bombings for its propaganda purposes.

Israeli and Zionist officials have been insinuating that the widely condemned terrorist bombings in Paris, for which the ISIS took responsibility, justified Israel’s crackdown on Palestinian resistance against Jewish colonialism, especially Israel’s lebensraum policies in the West Bank.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has been quoted as saying that the Paris bombings should make France and other countries understand Israel’s war on Palestinian terror.

Netanyahu’s opportunistic remarks seem to have been motivated by two main considerations.

First, is the desire to alleviate international pressure on Israel to terminate the decades-old occupation of the Palestinian homeland and allow for the establishment of a viable Palestinian state.

And, second, Israel is always eager to see as many French Jews as possible immigrate to Occupied Palestine in order to augment the ranks of a dwindling Jewish population due to comparatively higher demographic growth among Palestinians.

Article 5 considers an armed attack (real or otherwise) against one or more members, an attack against all. Collective self-defense is called for – perhaps in the wake of the Paris incident all-out war on humanity, risking global escalation if confrontation is provoked with Russia or China.

Unleashing US-led NATO’s killing machine could become the war to end all wars, risking world peace and humanity’s survival.

The reality of what’s happening with the refugees in Europe is far beyond anything being reported by the fake mainstream media. Many of the so-called “refugees” are actually occupying enemy forces waging a literal invasion of Europe.
The enemy is already inside the gates. And they are determined to destroy western culture by any means necessary.

Freedom Outpost: The West Has Lost the Will to Live "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The most basic, primitive honor a nation owes to its dead is to fight to defend itself—to defeat the enemy and win. And yet the West won't.

The West is hanging on by a thread and doesn't even know it. We are living off the fumes of the accomplishments of our forefathers and those who fought and died in the cause of freedom and individual rights. But the thread is wearing thin. Time is just about running out.

After the murderous jihad attacks in Paris comes the predictable Western response: not resolute self-defense, but weepy candlelight vigils, protestations of unity, and hashtags. After the jihad attacks in Garland, Texas, Chattanooga, the University of California Merced, and scores of arrests of American Muslims working for ISIS (the FBI has 900 ISIS-related investigations currently ongoing), our top priority should be to crush the enemy.

Instead, we get pathos and pitiful memes....

Alternative News Network: Rennard Stands Down: Full Statement "IndyWatch Feed World"

rennard

Lord Rennard has quit the LibDem Federal Executive:

A week ago, I was elected by the votes of the Liberal Democrat members of the House of Lords to be their representative on the party’s Federal Executive. Any Lib Dem peer could have stood, all of them could vote, and I was elected by 44 votes to 25. Since then a number of party members have objected to that outcome and sought to effectively overturn it by removing the right of the Lib Dem peers to have a representative on it.

I was disappointed that in a party called the Liberal Democrats there should be such a challenge to the result of a democratic election. I recognise, however, that there has been much controversy in the party and this has continued partly because it has been very poor in communicating to its members the outcomes of all the various processes investigating allegations made against me. In particular, many members have remained unaware of the key conclusion concerning me in the final report of the independent businesswoman, Helena Morrissey, who reviewed these processes.

Last December, her conclusion was that:

“At this point, December 2014, every investigation has concluded with no further action to be taken against Lord Rennard. The process over the past nearly two years – conducted according to the prevailing rules – has run its course and although the outcome is a source of great frustration to some, I believe that the Party can only move on if that outcome is accepte...

Freedom Outpost: Paris and What Should Be Done "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The horrific attacks in Paris on Friday have, predictably, led to much over-reaction and demands that we do more of the exact things that radicalize people and make them want to attack us. The French military wasted no time bombing Syria in retaliation for the attacks, though it is not known where exactly the attackers were from. Thousands of ISIS fighters in Syria are not Syrian, but came to Syria to overthrow the Assad government from a number of foreign countries -- including from France and the US.

Ironically, the overthrow of Assad has also been the goal of both the US and France since at least 2011.

Because the US and its allies are essentially on the same side as ISIS and other groups – seeking the overthrow of Assad – many of the weapons they have sent to the more "moderate" factions also seeking Assad's ouster have ended up in the hands of radicals. Moderate groups have joined more radical factions over and ove...

“According to a spokesman for Robert Cardillo, the current director of the US National Geospatial Agency (NGA), this system works in a way that not only seeks to attempt to access the situation as reflected at the moment in time when the most recent data was collected, but to also seek to predict what will follow.”

Geospatial-Intelligence

Written by Yoana exclusively for SouthFront

Geospatial Intelligence or “GEOINT” is actionable knowledge, a process, and a profession. It is the ability to describe, understand, and interpret so as to anticipate the human impact of an event or action within a spatiotemporal environment. It is also the ability to identify, collect, store, and manipulate data to create geospatial knowledge through critical thinking, geospatial reasoning, and analytical techniques. Finally, it is the ability to ethically collect, develop, and present knowledge in a way that is appropriate to the decision-making environment. Geospatial Intelligence doesn’t just provide the means by which to answer the questions of what?, when?, and where?, but also how?, why?, and what is the significance? Central to this proposed definition is the notion that the best geospatial intelligence resource is an educated analyst and that intelligence is about nothing if not about “out-thinking” your opponent. For all the appropriate emphasis on technologies, methodologies, tools, and infrastructure, people still are the most precious resource.

GEOINT of some kind or another is the foundation of intelligence. The data base of information has been growing since the age of computes, smartphones, and the worldwide web has come.

According to a spokesman for Robert Cardillo, the current dire...

It is all over the media, courtesy of the Associated Press, that Russia "accidentally" aired "secret plans" for a new nuclear weapon on two Russian national TV channels. NTV and Channel One, two channels under tight State control in Russia, reportedly aired footage curiously shot over a general's shoulder as he was meeting with Putin (reportedly one of four meetings Putin has held on defense just this week).

One large document contained drawings of a new submarine-launched nuclear torpedo Russia is calling Status-6. The system includes nuclear subs that carry huge, self-propelled underwater long-range torpedo-shaped drones that can, according to the documents, travel 5,400 miles and create extensive, uninhabitable " zones of radioactive contamination."

Pavel Felgenhauer, an independent military analyst, claimed, "The plan is to deliver a 100-megaton nuclear bomb to the U.S. shores. It would cause a highly radioactive tsunami."

Alternative News Network: Washington Refines Its False Flag Operations "IndyWatch Feed World"

By David Icke

Untitled (104)

‘Washington and its French vassal have refined how they conduct their false flag operations. With the Charlie Hebdo operation, they knew to immediately set the story in stone in order to avoid any questions from the print and TV media and in order to use the set story to take the place of an investigation.

The set story made it unnecessary to explain the mysterious “suicide” of one of the main police investigators while engaged in the investigation of the event. The set story also made it unnecessary to explain why it was necessary to kill rather than capture the alleged perpetrators, or to explain how the French authorities could be so wrong about the alleged get-away-driver but not about the two gunmen. There has been no explanation why the authorities believed there was a get-away-driver, and no such driver has been captured or killed. Indeed, there are many unanswered questions of no interest to any media except the alternative Internet media.

What the US and France learned from the Charlie Hebdo skepticism on the Internet is to keep the story flowing. Charlie Hebdo involved two scenes of violence, and the connection between the two acts of terrorism was vague. This time there were several scenes of violence, and they were better connected in the story.’

Alternative News Network: How to Peacefully Restore Freedom Using Non-Compliance "IndyWatch Feed World"

By admin

no-non-compliance

When people ask me about what my solutions are for restoring freedom and sovereignty, I often tell them to remove their consent and support for the destructive systems of the Controllers (the leaders of the New Word Order), and get involved in creating systems that work in harmony with nature to replace their destructive systems. Some examples of their destructive systems are the debt-based monetary system, the current political system, and modern religion.

Without the support of the people, the systems of the Controllers will collapse on their own, just like how a company can not stay in business without the support of customers. This is how we can peacefully restore freedom and sovereignty throughout the world without firing one bullet.

I also like to tell people to take responsibility for their lives and future, stop relying on saviors (i.e., government, politicians, messiahs, external gods) to save them, learn how to defend their natural rights, and study the art of non-compliance, so that they know how to use it to not comply to unlawful laws and orders.

The Importance of Non-Compliance

Non-compliance or the process of refusing to participate is a great way to peacefully stop supporting the systems of the Controllers. This process allows us to indirectly dismantle systems that are harmful to us without violent revolutions.

At the current state, it is very hard for us to...

We live in a Crybully-dominated culture – a cowardly, weak, yet very proud Pansy Nation brought about by the progressive multigenerational surrender of God-given individual, family, and church responsibilities to the State.

None of this is accidental.

None of it is random.

And it is all purposefully designed to lead us deeper and deeper into the arms and control of the almighty State.

This increasingly undeniable reality is finally being acknowledged by many who had previously written off or dismissed such propositions as the stuff of tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy nuttiness. As the culture disintegrates into chaotic madness at a head-spinning clip, such denial is proving harder and harder to maintain.

And that's a good thing.

If, as the Twelve Steppers like to say, the first step to solving a problem is admitting that it exists, then the recent awakening of many to hard truths and challenges that they'd previously dismissed for any number of lazy, self-serving reasons is indeed a very good thing. It's a gift from God.

Conviction is, by definition, not fun.

It is also necessary in order to pursue repentance and restoration, all by God's grace, so we should be thanking Him for the conviction that is now co...

Words cannot adequately describe the utter horror that was unleashed on the streets of Paris, France on Friday.  CNN is calling it “the worst violence witnessed in France since World War II," and even though it happened a couple of days ago now, many of us are still having a really tough time processing what took place.  Somehow, a small group of less than 10 radical Islamists was able to unleash a coordinated wave of attacks that killed at least 129 people and injured at least 350.  All of this comes less than a year after the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris, and many in the western world are now starting to understand that something has fundamentally changed.  Even though France has a highly advanced anti-terrorism infrastructure, and even though it also has some of the strictest anti-gun laws in Europe, none of that did anything to prevent these attacks.  Despite all of our advanced technology, the openness of our society makes us highly vulnerable to Islamic terror.  And as more waves of refugees from the Middle East are absorbed...

Parliamentary elections are happening in Turkey on the same day as an article is currently being written, and their results will be drawn after the article will be given over for edition. Meanwhile, if the intermediate calculations that are being announced by mass media sources are correct, then R. T. His ruling Party of Justice and Development (PJD) has a chance to keep the monopoly on power, and not worry anymore about forming a coalition with his rivals, which judging by everything, the Turkish president is not capable of due to the nature of his character, which is noted even by his supporters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi (video screen grab.)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi (video screen grab.)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned the terrorist attacks in Paris and said that India stands “firmly with the great people of France.

In a short video message in Delhi, Modi said he “condemned the barbaric attack in Paris in the strongest terms.” “And we must stand together at humanity in combating the major global threat of our times and to uphold our values and our way of life,” he added. A series of attacks in public places and entertainment centres in Paris on Friday killed over 120 people.

Earlier, at the G20 meeting in Turkey immediately after the attacks, Modi had said “The world must speak in one voice and act in unison against terrorism, without any political considerations. We must isolate those who support and sponsor terrorism; and, stand with those who share our values of humanism.”

There was a need to launch a “social movement against extremism,” , that would involve thinkers, religious leaders and  opinion maker, Modi said.

Signs of the Times: A constant stream of expensive drugs "IndyWatch Feed World"

It would be novel indeed to see a news media report entitled "Life- Saving Vitamins." That's a headline about vitamins that would be true for once. Instead, I see folks on TV speaking about those drugs they so desperately "need" while they plead with drug companies to just make them more affordable. "It's tough when it comes to medical stuff costing so much because you can't say no to medication," says one patient who seeks an expensive drug to help lower his high cholesterol [1]. "[It's] a kind of blackmail: if you want drug companies to keep turning out life-saving drugs, you will gratefully pay whatever they charge."- Marcia Angell, MD Take comfort, consumer. NBC is on it. On Wednesday, November 4th, 2015, they presented a news bit ominously entitled "Your Money or Your Life." NBC asked Leonard Schleifer, MD, CEO of Regeneron: "Why do the same medications cost so much more here than in other countries?" After all, NBC pointed out that drugs cost twice as much in the United States then they do in Canada, the United Kingdom, or Australia. And they noted that Regeneron's new drug Praluent is particularly costly. Dr. Schleifer justified the price tag on his company's expensive new drug because of the high cost of the product's development. "Do we want cheap drugs now, and no drugs in the future?" he asks. "Or more expensive drugs now, and a constant stream of drugs?" [2]

Zen Gardner: Mysticism, Oneness, Spirituality, and Describing the Indescribable "IndyWatch Feed World"

image_print

TheMindUnleashed

If order to figure out who we are, why we are here, and what our purpose is we often end up exploring religion, science, philosophy and spirituality.  This quest can teach us a lot of things about what other people have figured out so far.  New things are being figured out every single day and sometimes they contradict one another.

We can read and learn as many things as we want but without direct experience it will always be based on another person’s description of an event or finding that they had.  That always leave room for doubt.  Yes, you can have faith that their description of their experience is true but what if their perception was biased or there were important details that were indescribable or not yet measurable?

Science and our senses can only pick up a limited range of color, sound, and frequency and the idea of accurately being able to transfer emotional and impression data is still beyond most of our grasps even as empathic people.

We are unique and different for a reason.  Though our journeys may be similar only you can walk your path and form your own ideas about your experiences.

Let’s take a look at a particular type of experience that is unique and personal while still having themes that are similar when described.  This experience often seeds religions and though we aren’t sure what causes it many people are starting to have experiences that are completely changing their perceptions on life.

What is Mysticism and the Mystical Experience?

Mysticism...

The Big Picture: Paris Update "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Paris
David Kotok
Cumberland, November 16, 2015

In “Paris Attacks: The Acuity of Hindsight,”by Stratfor, Scott Stewart started his special commentary (November 14) as follows:

Until Nov. 13, the eight attackers… were just a handful of radical Islamists in a large universe of Islamist radicals in France. Many of these radicals are nonviolent, while a small segment of them are extremists who espouse violence to achieve their radical agenda — the type we refer to as jihadists. Yet even among the jihadists who advocate violence, there are divisions. Some maintain that jihad should be waged only defensively in support of fellow Muslims being oppressed or attacked in places such as Syria. Another subset advocates for attacks in a Western country such as France.… [A]mong the latter group, there are those whose threats are merely hot air and those who are actually willing to act. Even among those willing to attack there are actors who pose different degrees of threatFor French authorities, sorting through the universe of potential attackers to identify those who pose the greatest risk is a daunting challenge – as it is for any other government.

Originally appeared at Russland, translated by Yannick Meyer exclusively for SouthFront

The conversation of the two state leaders lasted, according to different statements, about 20 – 30 minutes. Only their interpreters were present.

The conversation happened during a break between the meeting of the leaders of the BRICS states and the continuation of the G20 meeting. Previously Putin and Obama chatted during a shared photo session.

Principal topic of the G20 is the war against terrorism, the refugee crisis and the reformation of the IWF.

The Argentinian President and the French President did not attend the meeting.

In the evening the White House spoke out about the topics of the conversation of the two Presidents.
Primarily it was about the increase of efforts to find a solution in the Syria crisis.
Beyond that they talked about the terror attacks in Paris and about the consolidation of forces in the fight against IS. The US-President used the opportunity to speak out his compassion related to the airplane crash in Egypt.

Washington rated the conversation as “constructive”.

Juri Uschakow, the consultant of the Russian President, said that they also talked about the Ukraine.
The topic of Ukraine was discussed after the topic of Syria, and less time was needed.
He also said that they share the strategic goals in...

But, behind the absurdity lies serious science that can add, and often has added, to our collective knowledge. THE LAST LAUGH: Prime Minister Narendra Modi with his UK counterpart David Cameron at Wembley Stadium in London on Friday.

It’s admirable that Narendra Modi puts no premium on English, speaking instead in Hindi at his press conference in London, which no Indian Prime Minister before him has. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in every other way a far greater man, was strangely diffident on this point: struggling to respond in English to Anglophone interlocutors, he became tongue-tied. Tony Blair once told Manmohan Singh that in 2002, when he had made several trips to Delhi, and George Bush had asked him before one of them why he was going back when he had been there recently, he had said that he had put a question then to Vajpayee, to which he hoped this time to get a reply.

Modi is quick with his responses and – because he speaks in Hindi – precise. We know therefore that when a journalist asked the British prime minister if he was comfortable welcoming a person who for the first two years of his premiership was not permitted to visit Britain because of his record as chief minister of Gujarat, Modi replied that he would “keep the recor...

NO REST FOR THE AWAKE - MINAGAHET CHAMORRO: Neo gi Halom i Gima'yu'us "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

Sometimes I get depressed about the state of the Chamorro language. Whenever I am talking to an elderly Chamorro about how our language is dying and the culture is being forgotten and I see them speaking to their grandchildren in English, it makes me want to explode. Everytime I hear elders complain about the young today and how soft and weak and spoiled they are, but who allow their children to be glued to iPads at dinner or in public, it makes me want to run away. When I sit in a meeting where everyone thinks that the solution to the saving of the language lies with an app, or software, but ignores that basic fact that what we really need is just more inter-generational use of Chamorro, the speaking of Chamorro not across a generation, but rather between generations, I want to set something on fire. Whenever I have a conversation with someone who tells me that Chamorro is only supposed to be used like this, or is only meant to talk about this or that, and doesn't want to expand the language to make it something that people today will see as living and contemporary, it makes me want to learn Mongolian and live in the Gobi Desert.

The bane of my existence for the past 10 years has been what I call "language losers." These are people, who may sometimes be very well-meaning, sometimes may be very knowledgeable about Chamorro language or Chamorro issues, but ultimately because of some part of their attitude or their praxis, does more harm than good in terms of helping to revitalize the Chamorro language. There are different...

The Saipan Blog: Achieving My Goals "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

Ten years ago today I wrote a blog about 10 goals that I hoped to achieve in moving to Japan.  Let's take a look and see how I did.

1. Learn Japanese
Fail. I don't speak Japanese.

2. Make enough money to pay my bills and save a little
Success!  I have a 401(k) and an IRA and my bills are all paid on time.  I even have a mortgage!

3. Make some Japanese friends
Success!  When I made this goal I thought I would spend three years in Japan and then move back to the mainland.  I had no idea I'd end up going back to Saipan.  I still keep in touch with some friends from Japan via Facebook and I know have friends and colleagues spanning the globe thanks to my profession.

4. Learn some Japanese recipes
Mild success.  I only stayed in Japan for six months; I could have learned more if I stayed longer.  But in my travels since I've picked up lots of things, including a Filipino wife who teaches me all about the food from her country.

5. Do something resume worthy
Success!  I didn't do anything of note in Japan, but in Saipan I organized the two largest island cleanups the island has ever seen and was the lead advocate for the creation of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument.  Since moving to Washington, DC I helped pass a dozen or so domestic shark laws, among other sharky things.

6. Work on a political campaign
When I wrote this I think I meant work on a political campaign in Japan.  That didn't happen, but I ran for mayor of Saipan and lost.

7. Take some great pictures
Success!  Check out my Facebook page for proof.

8. Get my blog traffic up to over 100 hits a day
Success!  At least for a while I was receiving abou...

From Question time today:

Grant Robertson: Is it correct that the 46,000 long-term unemployed is the highest level since 1999, other than two quarters in 2012?
Hon BILL ENGLISH: I would certainly want to investigate the number, because, as the member will be aware, in the welfare reform process there has been a lot of reclassification of people, and the product of that reclassification is that a lot more people are now regarded as available for work. They used to languish on the sickness benefit under the Labour Government, which decided they were hopeless and gave up on them. We do not give up on people like that. Even if they cannot get a job immediately, we try to help them get ready to get a job.

It was National that put a definition on "long-term" unemployed. In fact, long-term on any benefit was defined as 1 year plus.

There were 65,652 Jobseeker claimants who had been on a benefit for more than a year at September 2015. A substantial drop from 82,006 in September 2010.

Labour never officially defined long-term dependence on a benefit. Not until Robertson - in Opposition - decided it was 26 weeks or more....well, at least for the unemployment benefit.

The Wire: NASA Telescope Logs the 1,000th Blackhole Birth It’s Spotted "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

NASA has announced that its Swift telescope has detected its 1,000th gamma-ray burst (GRB). The Swift GRB mission was launched in November 2004, 11 years ago, to help astronomers better pin down the sources and mechanism of GRBs. The first GRBs were spotted in the 1967s (by satellites looking for secret nuclear-weapon tests), and it was only in the early-1990s that astronomers figured out they were extremely powerful blasts of energy that signalled the births of blackholes.

Since its launch, Swift has significantly contributed to the study of GRBs with its precision and longevity. The flashes of gamma-rays that this space-borne telescope studies last only for a few seconds, making it impossible for astronomers to pinpoint and study their sources accurately until more advanced engineering became available. Swift was launched in November 2004 to a low-Earth orbit – and from there, it was able to home in on GRBs bare seconds after they occurred, take multiple readings of its source, and relay the data to Earth so ground-based telescopes could get in on the action.

In the last decade, it has made 1,000 such observations – a truly staggering number for that’s the birth of 1,000 blackholes and 1,000 studies of the birth of blackholes.

Blackholes are born when very massive cosmic bodies – like giant stars – implode under the might of their own gravity. Sometimes, instead of giant stars, the dead cores of two stars that weren’t massive enough collide and merge, forming a blackhole. In both cases, matter from these bodies is expelled violently while jets of particles shoot out from the star’s dying core at almost the speed of light. These jets spike through the expelled matter, and as they reach the surface, they emit gamma-rays, the most energetic form of radiation possible. This burst of radiation, the GRB, is very bri...

coNZervative: RNZ on Conservative Politics "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

As they say, there has always been a 4.5%-ish constituency in NZ under MMP for a ‘christian-y’ family values party.  But we never get any help, like Dunne or ACT who achieve about 1/10th of our vote.  National is squeamish about ‘christian politics’ always has been, but is happy to help someone like Peter Dunne or David Seymour with a generous leg-up. Without it, they would not be there. So actually, they don’t deserve to be. They are blue jacket rorts.  And so this large minority party vote goes wanting, when actually, it is the largest of the minnows in the spectrum.

But it comes down to leadership:  Graham Capill, Brian Tamaki, Colin Craig…never cut the mustard. We actually need a policy platform and a media savvy leader, and an ability to build an accord with National and other groups.  I’d love to do the latter. But until we have a front-of-shop person, its a half-bake.

New Eastern Outlook: The Unholy Trinity – War, Political Incompetence and Sanctions Profiteering "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

635435222What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.” ~ Pericles … “Including the ones you have murdered.”… Jim W. Dean

Lost in the barrage of war reporting and one crisis after another like the Russian Sinai plane crash, is any focus on some of the other festering issues which seem to spawn new fires as fast as we can put one out. We got a “peace buzz” from the conclusion of the bogus Iran nuclear weapons threat, but that did not last long.

The refugee crisis sprung out of what seemed to be nowhere, but actually it didn’t…which is why I wanted to do a review of the old fashioned corruption forces we see persistently involved in all of these tragedies, from the gutter trash ghetto throat slitters, to the board room and political princes that seem to never catch a bullet or get a drone visit during their sleep.

We often dream at Veterans Today about what we could do to change the world if they lent us half the drone force for a year. We have a good target list already. It would be similar to the impact the Russia air group has had in Syria…almost unbelievable.

Russia expert John Helmer recently published a classic political corruption story on how former Polish Foreign minister Jan Kulczyk and coal mine-electricity billionaire oligarch Radoslaw Sikorski got busted for their taped lunch conversation in the Spring of 2014 at the Amber restaurant in Warsaw that changed their lives forever. Sikorski, a major advocate for Russian.....

News and Events: The Floating Kalabia "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

The project began when Conservation International collaborated with The Nature Conservacy to develop education in the islands of Raja Ampat, West Papua. The education vessel named Kalabia, cruises to every island in Raja Ampat to invite children from the villages to learn about environmental and marine biodiversity, with an aim to contribute to the preservation of the rich marine biodiversity there. The name Kalabia is taken from an endemic affecting the “walking” shark (Hemiscyllium Freycineti), which can only be found in Raja Ampat.

There is an urgent need to increase awareness among the people in the islands on the importance of preserving the environment as Raja Ampat is home to over 1500 fish species, 600 corals, 15 sea mammals, and 40 kinds of shrimp. Moreover, Raja Ampat is at the heart of the "Coral Triangle", an area considered by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) as a top priority for marine conservation.

LewRockwell: Want Fewer Young-Black-Male Killings? "IndyWatch Feed War"

Dear Mitch:

I hope and trust you don’t mind that I place us on a first name basis. We’re informal in the Big Easy, are we not? This letter will be highly critical of your efforts to radically reduce the murder rate in The Big Easy, particularly that of young black men (YBM) as victims. So I might as well start off on a positive note. I greatly admire you for, and congratulate you for your courage in these politically correct times, for acknowledging that the main source of this tragic loss of life is not (white) policemen shooting YBMs, but, rather, the fact that they are all too often victimizing each other.

If you seriously want to stop this massive carnage, it behooves you to learn of its true causal antecedents. Only by dealing with them can you stop their results.  So let us dispose of a few supposed root causes that really have little or nothing to do with this dreadfulness.

The horrendous murder of YBMs is not the legacy of slavery. As Thomas Sowell and Walter E. Williams never tire of telling us, there was far less of this senseless killing in the period between the ending of the war between theWill ridding our fair city of any one of these causal elements entirely end the senseless killings of YBMs? No, of course not. Will eliminating all of them together do so? Not likely. But, in the latter case, such an initiative will radically reduce this horrific slaughter. The perfect is the enemy of the good. These free enterprise remedies will not entirely solve the problem. It is too deeply embedded for that. But all these lives are precious, and if we can save even some of them, we will be doing the Lord’s work. Is an intact family an absolute guarantee that there will be no murders? That is silly. There are killers from two parent-headed families and most children of female-headed households do not engage in any crime whatsoever.  Will the er...

LewRockwell: Want To Start Your Own Country? "IndyWatch Feed War"

A micronation is a piece of land, either geographical or hypothetical, which claims to be a sovereign state—but isn’t. By the most bare-bones definition, this means all you have to do to create one is declare that you’ve done so. If you want to get fancy about it, you can also design your own passport, currency, regalia, and/or other accoutrements of statehood. Badgering the United Nations for recognition is optional, but by definition, micronations aren’t formally recognized by other countries or international bodies.

Some micronations are serious attempts driven by political ideology, while others are more like practical jokes. By some accounts, over 400 currently active micronations now exist. Here are 15 of the most interesting from the past few decades:

1. VÍT JEDLIČKA // LIBERLAND

In April 2015, a Czech man named Vít Jedlička declared that an otherwise unclaimed 2.7-square-mile patch of land between Serbia and Croatia was now a libertarian paradise called the Free Republic of Liberland. According to the micronation’s website, “The motto of Liberland is ‘To live and let live’ because Liberland prides itself on personal and economic freedom of its people.”

Applications are currently being accepted for citizenship from those who 1) have respect for others and their opinions, 2) “ have respect for private ownership, which is untouchable,” 3) do not have a “Communist, Nazi, or other extremist past,” and 4) have not been punished for past criminal offenses. Jedlička told TIME that within a few days of his announcement he had received 20,000 citizenship applications, although he planned to accept just 3000 to 5000.

LewRockwell: Lessons We Learned Too Late "IndyWatch Feed War"

“They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” ― Benjamin Franklin

“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”—Hermann Goering, German military commander and Hitler’s designated successor

For those who remember when the first towers fell on 9/11, there is an unnerving feeling of déjà vu about the Paris attacks.

Once again, there is that same sense of shock. The same shocking images of carnage and grief dominating the news. The same disbelief that anyone could be so hateful, so monstrous, so evil as to do this to another human being. The same outpourings of support and unity from around the world. The same shared fear that this could easily have happened to us or our loved ones.

Advocating torture makes you no better than terrorists. The horrors that took place at Abu Ghraib, the American-run prison in Iraq, continue to shock those with any decency. Photographs leaked to the media depicted “US military personnel humiliating, hurting and abusing Iraqi prisoners in a myriad of perverse ways. While American servicemen and women smiled and gave thumbs up, naked men were threatened by dogs, or were hooded, forced into sexual positions, placed standing with wires attached to their bodies, or left bleeding on prison floors.” Adding to the descent into moral depravity, the United States government legalized the use of torture, including waterboarding, in violation of international law and continues to sanction human rights vi...

LewRockwell: If You Believe the Government and the Media on ISIS "IndyWatch Feed War"

Is it any surprise that people on the fringe look for rational explanations for what appears to be irrational behavior (i.e. “conspiracy theories”) on the part of government and military officials?

Intensifying pressure on the Islamic State, United States warplanes for the first time attacked hundreds of trucks on Monday that the extremist group has been using to smuggle the crude oil it has been producing in Syria, American officials said.

For the first time?!?!?!

American officials have long been frustrated by ability of ISIS to generate tens of million[s] of dollars a month by producing and exporting oil.

For the first time?!?!?!

How many years has the US been bombing Syria?  Which so-called allies have been benefitting from the low-cost oil, therefore delaying action?  Rational people might wonder.

They have an excuse for the lack of earlier action:

Until Monday, the United States had refrained from striking the fleet used to transport oil, believed to include more than 1,000 tanker trucks, because of concerns about causing civilian casualties.

But what about the civilian casualties in a hospital?  No concern there.  A wedding? Nope, no problem.

In any case, weren’t these guys bright enough to find a way of warning the drivers and destroying the trucks?

To reduce the risk of harming civilians, two F-15 warplanes dropped leaflets about an hour before the attack warning drivers to abandon their vehicles, and strafing runs were conducted to reinforce the message.

They couldn’t have done this a year or two ago?

The area where the trucks assemble in Syria has been closely monitored by reconnaissance drones. As many as 1,000 trucks have been observed there...

LewRockwell: Government Schools Are a Catastrophe "IndyWatch Feed War"

The 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress report, also known as The Nation’s Report Card, shows that U.S. educational achievement, to put it nicely, leaves much to be desired.

When it comes to reading and math skills, just 34 percent and 33 percent, respectively, of U.S. eighth-grade students tested proficient or above — that is, performed at grade level or above. Recent test scores show poor achievement levels in other academic areas. Only 18 percent of eighth-graders are proficient in U.S. history. It’s 27 percent in geography and 23 percent in civics.

The story is not much better when it comes to high schoolers. According to 2010 and 2013 NAEP test scores, only 38 percent of 12th-graders were proficient in reading. It was 26 percent in math, 12 percent in history, 20 percent While educational achievement among whites is nothing to write home about, that for blacks is no less than a disaster. Only 13 percent of black eighth-graders score proficient or above in math, and only 16 percent do in reading. In 2013, only 7 percent of black 12th-graders scored proficient in math, and only 16 percent did in reading. The full magnitude of the black education tragedy is seen by the statistics on the other end of the achievement continuum. “Below basic” is the score given when a student is unable to demonstrate even partial mastery of knowledge and skills fundamental for proficient work at his grade level. In 2013, 62 percent of black 12th-graders scored below basic in math, and 44 percent scored below basic in reading.

Dr. Thomas Sowell has written volumes on black education. The magnitude of today’s black education tragedy is entirely new. He demonstrates this in “Education: Assumptions Versus History,” a 1985 collection of papers. Paul Laurence Dunbar High School is a black pub...

LewRockwell: What Should Be Done? "IndyWatch Feed War"

The horrific attacks in Paris on Friday have, predictably, led to much over-reaction and demands that we do more of the exact things that radicalize people and make them want to attack us. The French military wasted no time bombing Syria in retaliation for the attacks, though it is not known where exactly the attackers were from. Thousands of ISIS fighters in Syria are not Syrian, but came to Syria to overthrow the Assad government from a number of foreign countries — including from France and the US.

Ironically, the overthrow of Assad has also been the goal of both the US and France since at least 2011.

LewRockwell: The Man’s Guide to Western Boots "IndyWatch Feed War"

The Western-style riding boot is somewhere between folk art, pop culture, and functional clothing.

Actors have worn them, and so have Presidents — and for that matter, so have actors who became Presidents.

Most men, though, will go through life without ever having tried a cowboy boot on.

My advice? Don’t be that guy. Give it a shot. You don’t have to be a cowboy to wear and appreciate Western boots.

Although you’ll get more use out of them if you take up Western dancing and rodeo — a man can enjoy a touch of Western style in his outfits now and again.

Just like boater shoes aren’t exclusively for New Englanders with their own private yachts, well-dressed men can be comfortable taking the cowboy boot out of the Southwest and into America’s most fashionable cities.

How to do it? Well that’s the purpose of this cowboy boot primer.

Why Western Boots?

For most men, it’s hard to see the point of a fancy Western boot. They’re expensive items, and unless you grew up around men who wore them, they seem more like novelty or costume pieces than anything stylish.

But a savvy dresser can think of a cowboy boot as an outfit’s holdout weapon. At a distance, it looks like a quality leather shoe. Up close, the distinct advantages start to show:

  • Unique shape.Western-Boots-Toe-Shapes-AOM-400
  • The toe of a cowboy boot doesn’t have to be wickedly thin (although modern fashion tends that way), but it always has a distinct taper. This was originally to help slide in and out of the stirrups more easily, and it still gives your feet an active, dynamic shape that contrasts nicely with more staid dress shoe toes.
  • Added height. Shorter men have extra reason to love cowboy bo.....

LewRockwell: Conservatism Laid Bare "IndyWatch Feed War"

“Conservatism is the antidote to tyranny. It’s the only one. It’s based on thousands of years of human experience. There is nothing narrow about the conservative philosophy. It’s a liberating philosophy. It is a magnificent philosophy. It is a philosophy for the ages, for all times.” ~ Mark Levin

“I realized that conservatism was the philosophy that best suited me, with its emphasis on individual liberty, personal responsibility, and merit.” ~ Mark Levin

“The Conservative does not despise government. He despises tyranny. This is precisely why the Conservative reveres the Constitution and insists on adherence to it.” ~ Mark Levin

“I follow the Constitution, that’s what I do.” ~ Mark Levin

It should be noted, however, that none of these prisoners were pardoned. They all still have a criminal record for the non-crime of a drug “offense.” Thousands more were not released. And Bowerman must keep close track of the rules: no alcohol and no traveling for a time beyond the rural area outside Lubbock, Texas, where she will be staying.

Every American in prison for a drug “offense” should, of course, be pardoned and released—immediately. No one should ever be questioned, detained, arrested, tried, fined, or imprisoned for a drug “offense.” There shouldn’t even be any such thing as a drug “offense,” “crime,” “offender,” “trafficker,” or “dealer.” The whole concept should be considered just as absurd as a banana “offense,” “crime,” “offender,” “trafficker,” or “dealer.”

And as I have pointed out so many times, there is nothing in the Constitution that grants to the federal government the authority to identify different types of drugs, regulate the sale and usage of drugs, classify drugs on a schedule, have a drug czar, set up a Drug Enforcement Administration, ban certain drugs, pass any laws related to drugs, wage war on drugs, or have anything whatsoever to do with any drug that is used for any purpo......

Quote Unquote: Metro and murder "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

I bought a copy of the November issue of Metro, out of kindness I suppose. Also to see what Anthony Byrt had to say about art, and what Courtney Sina Meredith had to say about “Urbanesia”.

As a former magazine person, I looked at the masthead, which only magazine persons do, and discovered that Metro has a new editor, Susannah Walker. Nobody told me. She must have answered this ad seeking a “creative, solution orientated brand champion” and fitted the bill. Good for her.

Her bio says:

Ahem. Credit where it’s due: Inglewood was dubbed New Zealand’s murder capital by me, when I wrote the intro to Graeme Lay’s article “Murder in Moaville” in Quote Unquote the magazine in May 1995. In that article he referred to Inglewood as “the psychopath centre of New Zealand”, but I suppose Ms Walker preferred the soft option of “murder capital”.

The Wire: Images Of A Parisian Mourning "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

Street art at Place de la République

The Paris attacks happened on a Friday night. In the days after, Parisians struggled with the mere idea that, for the first time in the history of the country, suicide bombers had blown themselves up in their own familiar landmarks. During the weekend, people felt the urge to visit the different places that had been attacked not only to pay their respect to the dead but also simply to understand what had just happened in their city. They also felt they wanted to sit at cafés and resume their lives. Sitting at a terrasse last weekend in Paris was an act of defiance. A strange mix of grief, solemnity and joy, the simple joy of being alive in one of the most free and most beautiful city in the world, was perceptible on the streets.

Like so many other Parisians, I decided to go for a quick cup of coffee in my neighbourhood. It so happens that I live within walking distance of the rue de Charonne, where youngsters having a drink or dinner at the “terrasses” were killed. The cafés were full. At 2 in the afternoon, friends had gathered for a drink or a late lunch. The tables around me were full. The waiter, a tall and muscular bearded hipster, was busy taking orders. Everything was normal until I went to the counter to pay and routinely asked him how he was. With tears in his eyes, he told me all his colleagues from the neighbourhing bistrot had been killed. The name of this bistrot is “La belle équipe”, the Fine team. I offered him my sympathy, he smiled and left to attend to another client.

New Eastern Outlook: Is Ashton Carter Insane? "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

453453454US Secretary of Defense says Russia and China “Potentially More Damaging” than ISIS. “Terror elements like ISIL, of course, stand entirely opposed to our values. But other challenges are more complicated, and given their size and capabilities, potentially more damaging… Some actors appear intent on eroding these principles and undercutting the international order that helps enforce them… Of course, neither Russia nor China can overturn that order. But both present different challenges for it.”

These are the words of US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter. The world should be, and largely is, baffled by the stupidity and arrogance of such statements.

ISIS beheads, tortures, and kidnaps people. It has shocked the world with well publicized, horrendous acts of brutality — such as burning people alive. How exactly can Russia and China to be equated to such forces?

Russia has not invaded any country. Neither has China. Russia and China have not kidnapped anyone. They are not abducting and torturing people. Even if the most extreme allegations from anti-China and anti-Russia fanatics are to be believed, in no way can these two major countries be compared with ISIS.

New Eastern Outlook: The place and role of the USA in the modern world order "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

4353453454The abbreviation USA occupies almost a central place in public rhetoric and texts devoted to various aspects of world politics. In recent years, even just mentioning this abbreviation in Russia has provoked strong polarised emotions, which are rather indirectly related to the complicated content that it contains within.

Most of those who hold emotions such as adoration currently constitute a marginal political trend and hardly deserve to be involved in any disputes.

A much more serious problem is the massive dominance of the varying degrees of heated negative emotions. The latter is direct consequence of an inadequate response to the two most important circumstances accompanying the end of the Cold War.

The first case is due to the persistent pain caused by the defeat of the Soviet Union in the Cold War. In this sense the frequent attempts by adults to ignore the obvious formal evidence of the aforesaid deplorable fact in an emotional and childish way are not fitting.

The second case is related to the other (and also undisputed) fact that since 1991 up to the present day the United States has played a “particularly unique and leading” role in the new emerging global game. And it is not because President Barack Obama said so or because the same words (addressed, incidentally, more to the internal, not external audience) are written in certain official documents.

It is so, because at...

Anti-nuclear activist SP Udayakumar. Credit: IANS

In India we often indicate the superiority of a particular product (be it a pair of pants or a crate of mangoes) by referring to it as being of “export-quality.” I have often wondered whether our much-vaunted democracy is another instance of something Indian that is not really intended for domestic consumption but only to impress those outside our country. It seems we have reduced democracy to just three things: (a) the conduct of largely free and fair elections; (b) orderly transitions of power between civilian regimes; and (c) the fact that the Indian armed forces are uninvolved in politics.

When subject to a less superficial and more substantive audit, our claims to democracy falter at so many levels.

Almost 70 years after independence, nearly 80% of our population remains incredibly poor, living on less than $2 a day. The degree of malnutrition among our young is the highest in the world. On the Human Development Index we are not only buried way down the list of nations, we are regressing in comparison to neighbors such as Bangladesh. What good is the right to vote if so many cannot even be sure of the next meal?

At any point in time since Independence the number of Indians in states governed by some form of authoritarian rule (Kashmir and the entire northeast come to mind) exceeds the population of many nations in this world. We claim to have freedom of press, but a study by Delhi’s Center for the Study of Developing Societies found that not one of...

No Minister: KELVIN DAVIS BLASTS USELESS PRISON GUARDS AT PAREMOREMO "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

The headline that wasn't ... why, because 'Pare' is staffed by members of the NZ Corrections Association (read Union).    So when yesterday an inmate was knifed and sustained serious injuries Davis is 'stum'.  How can that be?

Davis is quite happy to shill for those 'New Zealanders' about to be deported back to NZL even though they have turned their (collective) backs on this country (at least Howie and I can agree on something).   He turns ballistic when anything goes wrong in prisons staffed by SERCO so how is it that a deathly silence ensues when his Union mates fail in their duty of care.

Far be it for me to suggest that he has sold his soul to Bevin Hamlin but it would be interesting to see, come election time, where he gets his funding from.     Davis is of course perfectly entitled to pimp for his Union mates but, in doing so, he leaves himself wide open to being accused of a certain selective morality.

Guess for some it goes with the territory.

The Dim-Post: Shorter Ng/Rachinger/Slater/Key "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

Keith Ng has a fascinating post up on all of the strange things that were happening regarding Cameron Slater and Ben Rachinger and their hilarious and dysfunctional search for ‘Rawshark’, the mysterious hacker that gave Slater’s emails to Nicky Hager. You should go and read the whole thing, but because Keith is so comprehensive its easy to miss the absurdity of what happened here, which is:

  1. Slater told Rachinger he wanted proof that various enemies of his (mostly journalists, but also Kim Dotcom, Rangi Kemara and Keith himself) were involved in the hack. He agreed to pay Rachinger for the proof
  2. A brief time – sometimes a matter of hours – after each enemy was named Rachinger got back to Slater and assured him that he had obtained this proof. Slater then paid Rachinger who provided with very questionable-looking chat transcripts or encrypted files that Slater couldn’t open. Then onto the next enemy!
  3. Slater then repeated the names of the people that Rachinger had ‘proved’ were involved in the hack to senior journalists, senior police officers and the Prime Minister, and police and journalists started running around the country investigating or trying to interview the people who Slater had named.

One of the strangest things about the WhaleOil phenomenon is that someone who was pretty obviously a troubled fantasist briefly became one of the most powerful people in the country by drawing a lot of our most senior political and media leaders into his fantasies.

Science and religion both concern us because we can’t do without science and its derivative, technology, and religion has been woven into the fabric of our society over many centuries. However, the methods that science and religion use to find an answer to a question, to solve a problem or simply to find the truth, are fundamentally different.

Science uses the scientific method, or the experimental method, which is based on reason and logic. It consists of four distinct steps: the framing of a question on the basis of careful observation or analysis of existing data, the formulation of a testable hypothesis, the performance of experiments to check the hypothesis and, finally, arriving at the answer. One may of course in certain circumstances omit the ste...

Asia-Pacific Perspective: Second Recession Hits Japan Under Abenomics "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

from Asia Times: We thought Abenomics was supposed to help the Japanese economy grow, not shrink.

Japan on Monday reported that its economy contracted in the quarter ended Sept. 30, pushing the nation into its second recession since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe took office in December 2012 and its fourth technical recession in five years.
Shinzo Abe

A recession is defined as two quarters in which the economy contracts. With third-quarter gross domestic product declining at an annualized 0.8% after it contracted 0.7% in the second quarter, it makes it officially a recession.

Economists blamed weak business investment as companies cut back on spending and production in the face of slow growth in China and a weak global outlook.

According to Japan’s Cabinet Office inventories subtracted 0.5 percentage point from growth this quarter as companies reduced stocks and business investment subtracted 0.2 percentage point from growth.

“Abenomics’ first two arrows of monetary and fiscal stimulus were meant to buy time, but Japan failed to make progress with painful reforms needed to boost its growth potential,” Hiroshi Shiraishi, senior economist at BNP Paribas Securities, told Reuters. “Without reform (the ‘third arrow’), the economy’s growth potential remains low, making it vulnerable to shocks and to suffering recessions more often.”

Reuters reported that Economics Minister Akira A...

Every Position On The Spectrum Supports The Government’s Propaganda

Paul Craig Roberts

This excellent article by Glenn Greenwald — http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article43438.htm — reminded me that I have meant to write about how every sort of interest attaches to the government’s propaganda in order to make its point.

Greenwald shows how the Snowden haters in the US media seized on the Paris attack in order to blame Snowden. The American, indeed Western, media consists of the scum of the earth, and they all together are no match for Glenn Greenwald. Greenwald shows that they are so dimwitted that they cannot remember their previous stories long enough to save them from making laughing stocks of themselves when they gang up on Snowden.

The presstitutes that constitute the Western media had a great incentive to buy in to the false story of the Paris attack, because they saw an opportunity to blame the attack on Snowden, who showed them up for what they are — whores who lie for the government for money.

Likewise, anti-immigration web sites and political parties have a great stake in the false story of the Paris attack, because they can use it to emphasize the perils of allowing into a country people who don’t belong there.

The leftwing buys into the government’s lies, because it proves their point that Western imperialism and neo-colonialism brings blowback. The oppressed colonies rise up and send death and destruction to the imperialist’s homelands. This is emotionally satisfying to the left even though it hands over to the government control over the population.

As for the fearful, if the blacks are not going to murder them in their beds, surely the terrorists will. Only the government can make them safe by repealing all civil liberties. TV program after TV program — even RT — presents citizens testifying how...

Air Niugini Employees Demand Payout Of Their Employee Contributions/Communication Unions Demand Payouts of State’s Contributions

The PTC(C) Act provided the employers of the old PTC with an option of a payout of their own component of the benefits from POSFB.

No such option was provided for the Air Niugini employees, but there were numerous requests from Air Niugini employees for payout of their own share of contributions. This was related to the fact that Air Niugini management, including trustee Koivi, had reached an extra legal agreement with the union that NAC employees who continued in employment with Air Niugini would be offered the payout of their contributions previously made to POSF.

Mr Kaul advised the NPF board during their 111th board meeting on February 20, 1998 that it was anticipated Air Niugini employees would demand payout of their own contributions following the transfer of funds from POSF. The board resolved to offer Air Niugini employees payout of their own contributions...

No Minister: MORE CORBYN WOES "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

I see Jeremy Corbyn has cancelled his proposed address to a Labour Party Regional Conference taking place in Hertfordshire where he was to defend his leadership (or lack thereof).

This follows a very public revolt last week where 37 of his MPs either voted in favour of, or failed to vote against, the Government's Economic Responsibility Bill.   This against a backdrop of Labour's Shadow Chancellor having first said the Party would support the Bill and then doing a 180 degree U Turn to demand the Party oppose it.

It is reported that Corbyn threatened to sack shadow ministers who were planning to vote against him but softened his stance when he realized the scale of the rebellion and allowed 16 of them them to 'miss' the vote.

That did not stop Corbyn acolytes branding the rebels as class traitors and threatening vengeance against them. Remind me again how many times Corbyn himself voted against his own Party when they were in government ... rhetorical question ... answer 533 times.    'As ye sow so shall ye reap' comes to mind along with 'A house divided against itself cannot stand'.    Mr Lincoln got that right.

The coverage of Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to the UK has included both stories of protests and accolades. The piece de resistance of the visit was undoubtedly the mammoth gathering at Wembley Stadium, organised by a private organisation, when a crowd of 60,000 assembled to mark the triumphant return of Modi to Britain after a gap of twelve years. “The UK has never stopped me from coming here, they have never banned me from coming here,” he told a press conference the day before when a Guardian reporter brought up the earlier British policy of keeping him out because of his role as Chief Minister during the pogrom against Gujarati Muslims in 2002. “Perhaps I could not come because of my own time constraints,” Modi said.

The majority of the audience in Wembley stadium on November 13 were Gujarati Hindus, self-confessed Modi fans, who make up much of the Indian diaspora in the UK. They had worked hard for weeks in preparation and waited for hours in the numbing cold for the moment when their hero would finally appear in person, to give d...

The Economic Collapse: Russia’s New ‘Nuclear Torpedo’ Can Create Giant Tsunamis And Wipe Out Entire Coastal Cities "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Nuclear Explosion - Public DomainWhile the eyes of the world are on ISIS, Russia is creating weapons unlike anything the world has ever seen before.  Plans for a giant self-propelled nuclear torpedo that can create a giant tsunami more than 1,000 feet tall were recently “leaked by mistake” by the Russian media.  Apparently the warheads on these torpedos are designed to create so much radiation “that everything living will be killed” – including those that try to survive the attack by hiding in underground shelters.  These “robotic mini-submarines” would have a range of up to 10,000 kilometers and would be able to evade all existing U.S. detection systems.  To say that such a weapon would be a “game changer” would be a massive understatement.

The stunningly beautiful Duke of York islands are the closest small islands to the site of the proposed Solwara 1 experimental mine in Papua New Guinea, yet the islanders say they have been completely ignored in the mine development process.

solwara_1_mapThe 13 Duke of York islands sit offshore from Kokopo, in the narrow St George’s Channel between New Britain and New Ireland. They lie directly south-east of where the seabed mining is scheduled to begin in 2017.

The islanders are already facing the impacts of climate change with the rising sea level affecting food security on the low lying atolls.

In 1999 the islanders collected signatures on a petition stating their overwhelming opposition to the proposed mining. The petition was presented to the East New Britain Provincial Government but, fifteen years later, the islanders are still waiting for a response.

“On October 26, according to the reconnaissance data, four planes from Turkey arrived to the airport of the city of Aden (Yemen). Two of them belong to Turkish Airlines, one — to Qatar Airways and one more aircraft owned by an airline of the United Arab Emirates,” said the Syrian army spokesman. “There were more than 500 militants of the Islamic State terrorist organization on board, they were taken from Syria to save them from Russian airstrikes,” General Mayhub said.

According to him, “the militants were met by officers of the Saudi coalition that took them from the airport in three groups. The first went to the city of Al-Bab in Mandeb province (Yemen), the second — to Marib (Yemen), the third — to the Saudi regions of Jizan and Asir.”

“Our unmanned aerial vehicles are fixing a considerable increase in the number of new IS targets in Syrian territory. The IS leadership is redeploying personnel reinforcement from Raqqa province and Iraq’s territory to the area of military hostilities in the west of Syria,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in an interview on Rossiya 1 television channel last week.

Russia started a military operation against the Islamic State terrorist group (which is banned in Russia) in the Syrian territory at the request of Syrian Presid...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/11991905/First-genetically-modified-humans-could-exist-within-two-years.html

Humans who have had their DNA genetically modified could exist within two years after a private biotech company announced plans to start the first trials into a ground-breaking new technique.

Editas Medicine, which is based in the US, said it plans to become the first lab in the world to ‘genetically edit’ the DNA of patients suffering from a genetic condition – in this case the blinding disorder ‘leber congenital amaurosis’.

The disorder prevents normal function of the retina; the light-sensitive layer of cells at the back of the eye. It appears at birth or in the first months of life and eventually sufferers can go completely blind.

The rare inherited disease is caused by defects in a gene which instructs the creation of a protein that is essential to vision.

But scientists at Editas Medicine in the US believe they can fix the mutated DNA using the ground-breaking gene-editing technologyCrispr.

Katrine Bosley, the chief executive of Editas Medicine, told a conference in the US that the company hopes to start trialling the technology on blind patients in 2017.

It would be the first time the technology h...

http://dailysignal.com/2015/11/06/new-york-attorney-general-tries-to-criminalize-scientific-dissent-on-climate-change/?utm_source=heritagefoundation

Everyone reading this should do the attorney general of New York, Eric T. Schneiderman, a big favor: buy a copy of the U.S. Constitution, highlight the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights with a bright yellow or orange Sharpie, and mail him a copy.

Schneiderman obviously needs a remedial lesson in the fact that the government is banned from censoring or restricting speech, and certainly has no business “investigating” Americans, including corporations, for their views on – of all things – a contentious scientific theory.

The New York Times is reporting that Schneiderman has subpoenaed extensive financial records, emails and other documents of Exxon Mobil to investigate whether the company “lied to the public about the...

http://futuristech.info/posts/response-to-the-double-edged-absurdity-of-ray-kurzweil-s-metaphor

Recently I stumbled upon an article entitled “The Double-Edged Absurdity of Ray Kurzweil’s Metaphor” and felt a little bit uneasy after reading it. What is the fuss all about? Namely, the author disagrees with Ray Kurzweil’s concern regarding technology and tries to demonstrate that risk is negligible, claiming that potential benefits from upcoming tech outgrows potential harm so much, that we should just ignore the threat. I, for one, disagree with that position.

Let’s start with the “controversial” metaphor comparing technology to a double-edged sword. The author states: “Technology isn’t a doubled-edged sword. At worst it is a 99% good sword and tiny 1% bad sword. Doubled-edged implies a 50/50 harm/goodness.” They try to prove their opinion by pointing to the relative rarity of accidents such as cutting ones finger with a knife or burning down a village by fire. The author admits that accidents happen, but benefits from using knives, fire, or more broadly, technology, outweighs losses.

Firstly, knowledge acquired by science and technology by itself are double-edged swords. They are too...

Follow The Money: Putin’s daughter, a young billionaire and the president’s friends "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

B-katerina

http://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/russia-capitalism-daughters/

Since Vladimir Putin began cementing his grip on Russia in the 1990s, many of his friends have grown famously rich.

Not so the president himself, say his supporters, who insist Putin is above the money grab that has marked his reign. His public financial disclosures depict a man of modest means. In April, Putin declared an income for 2014 of 7.65 million roubles ($119,000). He listed the ownership of two modest apartments and a share in a car parking garage.

His daughter Katerina is doing considerably better, supported by some of the Russian president’s wealthy friends, a Reuters examination shows.

After unconfirmed media speculation about Katerina’s identity, a senior Russian figure told Reuters that she uses the surname Tikhonova. Andrey Akimov, deputy chairman of Russian lender Gazprombank, said he had met Katerina when she was little and more recently, and that Tikhonova was Putin’s daughter.

Reuters has also learned that earlier this year Katerina, 29, described herself as the “spouse” of Kirill Shamalov, son of Nikolai Shamalov, a longtime friend of the president. Shamalov senior is a shareholder in Bank Rossiya, which U.S. officials have described as the personal bank of the Russian elite.

As husband and wife, Kirill and Katerina would have corporate holdings worth about $2 billion, according to estimates provided to Reuters by financial analysts. That wealth stems mainly from a large publicly disclosed stake in a major gas and petrochemical company that Kirill acquired from Gennady Timchenko, another longtime friend of Putin.

Also among the young couple’s holdings is a seaside villa in Bia......

United Nations News Centre - Israeli punitive demolitions of Palestinian homes violates international law – senior UN relief official: “I am distressed by reports of punitive demolitions carried out by Israeli security forces of five homes in the Jerusalem, Nablus, and Ramallah governorates in the last few days,” Robert Piper, the UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid and Development Activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, said in a statement, noting that two Palestinians were reported killed and nine others injured in clashes today protesting against the demolition.

In operations to “deter others,” the family homes of five alleged perpetrators of attacks against Israelis in 2015 have been demolished by Israeli security forces since 14 November. At least nine additional adjacent apartments have been damaged and rendered unsafe. The deaths and injuries occurred during the most recent operation this morning in Qalandiya refugee camp.

IMG_1059

by Willinois / DailyKos

Seven community members and concerned citizens are blockading entrances to the Koch Carbon Transfer Terminal (KCBX) on Chicago’s Southeast side.

The blockade began at 8am Monday morning. By 9am they were joined by 10th ward Chicago Alderwoman Susan Garza who sat in support with the blockaders. Over a dozen trucks have been prevented from entering or leaving the facility. The seven blockaders are determined to stay until forcibly removed.

Sixty foot tall piles of petcoke, a byproduct of refining oil, began appearing on Chicago’s southeast side near the Calumet River two years ago. Community action won the closure of two storage sites, but one transfer site remains open, menacing the health and well being of residents.

“In the two years our community has been fighting the open storage of petcoke, I have had a baby. I live in constant fear of my seven month old son have respiratory problems. I am disgusted by corporations putting their profits over the health of our community. I feel like we have gone through all of the formal complaint processes and it is time to take direct action. I don’t know what else to do to protect the health of my baby,” said Kate Koval, a local mother and lifetime community resident, who is sitting in the blockade.

Chicago cops conducted unauthorized spying on protesters | Chicago Sun-Times: The department previously has acknowledged spying on protesters including African-American and left-wing activists speaking out against police tactics in the wake of the Ferguson killing. Officials said the investigations were legally authorized, followed department safeguards designed to protect First Amendment rights and were carried out under the watchful eyes of department lawyers.

But that wasn’t always the case, the newly obtained records show.

A police intelligence-gathering unit tracked demonstrators and exchanged information about them with federal officials for nearly three months before getting the required approval from the department’s general counsel, according to the records, which the police released in response to a series of requests made under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.

Chesapeake Climate Action Network: More than 70 Groups Call for a Permanent Ban on Fracking in Maryland "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Baltimore, MD—Today, 72 groups, compelled by the mounting evidence of fracking’s negative effects, announced their call for a permanent, statewide ban on fracking in Maryland to protect public health, our air, water, climate and local business interests.

The organizations include a range of environmental, health, faith, labor and business groups including Food & Water Watch, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Maryland League of Conservation Voters, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East – Maryland/DC Division, National Nurses United, Waterkeepers Chesapeake, Interfaith Power & Light, Breast Cancer Action, The Harvest Collective, and the Chesapeake Sustainable Business Council.

A full list of groups and their call for a fracking ban can be found here: http://www.dontfrackmd.org/who-we-are

“It is impossible to ignore the mounting evidence showing that fracking poses severe health threats,” said Thomas Meyer, Maryland Organizer at Food & Water Watch. “On top of that, fracking could destroy Maryland’s growing sustainable economy; everything from tourism and recreation to farms and restaurants could be devastated by fracking. A two year moratorium is a good start, but in order to truly protect Maryland’s residents and economy, a complete ban is necessary.”

“Introducing industrial-scale gas development and fracking into the mountains of western Maryland is completely incompatible with what is primarily a tourism-based economy,” said Allegany County resident Dale Sams. “Fracking requires huge volumes of water, which will have to be extracted from our rivers and streams; and our narrow country roads and small bridges will be damaged by the thousands of heavy trucks used to haul drilling equipment and toxic waste. The only way to protect western Maryland from these impacts is to ban fracking.&#822...

"IndyWatch Feed Tas": Dr Kevin Bonham: How Bad Is Bryan Green's Rating? "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Last week I reported on the EMRS poll which has shown a probably Turnbull-led resurgence for Tasmania's Hodgman Liberal state government.  One figure has dominated discussion of the poll in the subsequent week:

19%

19% is the preferred premier rating of Labor Opposition Leader Bryan Green (compared with Will Hodgman's 56).  I often rail here against the media overuse of preferred-leader stats to spin a yarn, and against polls that poll preferred-leader scores but don't also poll and release approval ratings.  I even have a piece here declaring such scores to be rubbish.  They're not totally meaningless, but they're messy indicators that are often biased to incumbents, they lag behind changes in approval rating, and they don't have a very good predictive record.

Part of the problem is that a preferred-leader score is a comparative indicator, so it's impossible to discuss what it says about one leader without thinking about what it says about another.  Does a big lead for an incumbent Premier say that voters really like the Premier and don't mind the Opposition Leader, or does it say that voters mildly like the Premier and can't stand his opponent?  EMRS have been polling the answers to these questions, but unfortunately they haven't been releasing the results.

As Matt Smith observes (in a notable piece that suggests Labor are disheartened and just going through the motions) numbers like this can spell a lot of trouble for a leader, and can ignite leadership speculation.  We shouldn't overstate the "trouble" angle; some state...

We seem to be living in a police state where the 60s never happened.

The roadside drug testing is rampant these days and after reading Mary Sweet’s letter regarding her friend’s experience with this, I want to let people know we do have an alternative to this harassment.

Seriously Fact Up, on BayFM (Wed, 6am-9am), did a story on this last week and they have now posted on their FB site a card suitable for printing.

It states your rights which includes saying NO to being searched. Yes, if you are driving erratically and endangering lives and property the police should intervene but this random stopping people and subjecting them to ingesting chemicals reeks of a society we should be protesting.

What happened to the principal of being innocent until proven guilty?

These drug tests are invasive, costly and not reliable.

I have printed out the Statement For Police card, am carrying it in my wallet and I urge everyone to do the same.

With Mullum Music Fest on our doorstep, these police checks will be increasing. We need to band together and refuse this treatment before more of our rights are eroded away.

Here is some background to the concept I’m exploring with this blog.

Thanks to Urban Seed for publishing this article.

Here’s the abstract for “Untraditional Custodians: Transport corridors as creation stories of Australian cities”

The words which are used to describe movement in Australian cities present a profound challenge to the practice of respect for the Traditional Owners in Australia. People, who “see without perceiving and hear without understanding,” is an apt definition of urban populations describing movement around Australian cities. Australia’s vocabulary of urban place names is based upon a phenomenon of creating memorials, in the form of street and place names. The origins of many of these memorials have been forgotten, lost or ignored. Those which are remembered are often remembered within a particular antiquated framework for speaking of the past. “Speaking in street names” re-invigorates these memorials to enable healing. Every commuter is the “untraditional” custodian of at least one face of the multi-faceted story about the creation of Australian cities.

Bob Brown Foundation will this week host Tarkine BioBlitz, a festival of science in nature, from Thursday 19th to Sunday 22nd November. 100 participants will spend 72 hours exploring biodiversity in the Tarkine, with visitors from interstate, Hobart and around the NW region of Tasmania. The BioBlitz is led by more than 15 expert scientists across the fields of ecology, taxonomy, botany and biology.

“Tarkine BioBlitz will be a fun and educational event where everyone can explore, learn and contribute to our knowledge of biodiversity. We will contribute a significant resource of biodiversity data and share knowledge in one of the last wild places on the planet, the Tarkine” said Bob Brown Foundation’s Campaign Manager Jenny Weber.

“The Bob Brown Foundation is building a national and international campaign to bring forward the day when the Tarkine gets the respect, status and protection it warrants as a prime part of Australia's, and the world's, surviving cultural, natural and national heritage,” said Ms Weber.

“Science as a central component to this campaign, including addressing the knowledge gaps in records of biodiversity in the Tarkine region. Intensive field studies of two locations will be conducted in a coastal region and forest region” said Ms Weber.

“Bioblitzes are a recent innovation which blend the resources of institutions, experts and the public in order to rapidly generate large amounts of new and valuable biological information about a natural landscape or habitat. Ronald's space: Part 10: Australia’s “irrelevant” crimes against humanity. Is the Hellicar Decision the key to millions of people filing a class action law2 suit against the federal government? "IndyWatch Feed National"

Can millions of Australians who have the dole turned off for alleged “Breach of contract” or have been the victims of unconstitutional tort actions to recover alleged over-payments actually reverse the situation and sue the Federal Government for violation of civil rights and reckless endangerment?

The High Court’s decision, Australian Securities and Investments Commission v Hellicar [2012] HCA 17 was handed down by the High Court on May 3rd 2012. Paragraph 143 of this decision states:

“The proposition that the public interest requires that the facts upon which a regulatory authority relies must be facts that “actually occurred” appears to require that regulatory agency to make some final judgement about what “actually occurred” before it adduces evidence. Deciding the facts of a case is a court’s task, not a task for a regulatory authority.”

The court also ruled in paragraph 141 that:

“…that the public interest can only be served if the case advanced on behalf of [a] regulatory agency does in fact represent the truth in the sense that the facts relied upon as primary facts actually occurred.”

When it comes to civil rights compliance, the credibility of the Australian Federal Parliament and Australian political parties  is absolutely lousy:

Unidentified Aerial Phenomena - scientific research: Australian sightings 1947 (prior to 24 June) "IndyWatch Feed National"

Hi all,

Introduction

If you browse the TROVE digitised newspaper collection of the National Library of Australia, using the keywords "1947" and "flying saucer," you will find hundreds of press articles.

However, most of these are non-Australian related; in fact most refer to United States sightings. There are also comments by interested individuals, about this novel phenomenon.

Occasionally, you will, with a lot of effort, find little gems about pre 24 June 1947 Australian sightings.

Pre 24 June 1947

I recently came across one such report, in an obscure Australian regional newspaper, dated Tuesday 8 July 1947. Page two of this edition of "The Murrumbidgee Irrigator" (Leeton, News South Wales, 1915-1954) carries the relevant article. Granted, it wasn't reported until after 24 June 1947, but it is claimed to have happened in May 1947. Here are the details:

"In May last during the rice harvest, Mr H Nettlebeck was out in the field when he heard a swishing noise as if a mob of ducks were flying overhead.

On looking up he saw five metal bodies flying in V formation with the Sun glistening on them. They appeared to be about 2000 feet up and each looked to be about the size of a large duck. He estimated the speed as about 1000 miles per hour.

Mr Nettlebeck states that the whole thing was too fantastic at the time for him to...

There is a mid week bird walk at Buderim Forest Park this Wednesday, 18th November at 8.00am. Meet at Harry’s Lane , off Lindsay Rd , Buderim.   [UBD G17].
John Malings will lead the walk.

"Buderim Forest Park is a 45 hectare secluded oasis, hidden on the northern side of Buderim, less than a kilometre from the Buderim Village. This is a rainforest world of tall trees, ferns, babbling waterfalls, cascades and bird calls.

The area was purchased many years ago by the Council as a reserve for all of Buderim.

Amazingly much of the creek actually belongs to private land owners as once did the waterfall! The falls were a favourite recreational place for the region’s indigenous people and have been unofficially named “Serenity Falls”, but are widely known as the Buderim Falls."

Almost every road in Tasmania is a motorcycle rider’s paradise with more corners than you can count. But there are also many dangers for riders.

With the Christmas holidays approaching and the state expecting a wave of riders to visit, the Tasmanian Road Safety Advisory Council (RSAC) has completed a short five-minute motorcycle video (V-log) to educate interstate motorcyclists about the joys and dangers of Tassie roads.

In their press release, the RSAC says that from 2010 to 2014, there were 1249 serious casualty crashes, with 131 of these involving tourists.

“Interstate motorcycle riders made up nearly half (46%) of these crashes and of these 86% involved a single motorcycle,” the video says at the start. They are sobering statistics!

Help support prisoners connect with their kids through ‘Read-Along Dads’

Public support is being sought through a crowdfunder to raise vital funds to continue a powerful program connecting dads in prison with their kids, by creating a recording of them reading a book for their child.

The Crowdfunder is at https://www.chuffed.org/project/readalongdads

‘Read-Along Dads’ was founded by a group of local residents in Castlemaine in Central Victoria, which is near the Loddon Prison. Loddon is home to hundreds of low and medium-security prisoners from all across Victoria.

Friends of Castlemaine Library (FOCAL), wanted to help the men keep in touch with their children while they were separated. They also wanted to help the children through this difficult time – and promote literacy skills.

Both the audio recording and a copy of the book itself are sent to the child who can listen to their parent’s voice while reading along. Already the program has involved more than 300 prisoners and their kids.

The feedback from prisoners has been overwhelmingly positive.

One prisoner who has participated in the project said, “It’s hard to explain the feeling I get out of it when I know that at night I’m the last voice he hears before he goes to bed”.

However, recently the number of prisoners has doubled with the completion of new facilities, and FOCAL is struggling to find the funds to buy the books and keep recording, let alone involve the hundreds more prisoners and their children.

So the group is turning to the community to help donate to continue the program.

The crowdfunder will run from November 12th to Christmas and has a target of raising $30,000. Just a $60 donation provides kids with the gift of their dad reading them a story.

Bendigo

“Kindness is a language the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” And it is also something understood by an injured Chinese goose!! Despite our very poor rendition of our year-eight Chinese, Bendigo Goose quickly recognised that we sat on the right side of kindness. Found on a public wetland, with a badly injured leg that prevented her from both walking and swimming normally, was dear Bendigo. With the goodness of the human heart coming to the fore as they recognised the peril such a disability posed to the young bird, Bendigo was soon “vetward” bound. Here it was determined she was suffering a most debilitating case of bumblefoot. Soon debrided and medications given, a safe haven was needed for the friendly girl.

Geese are often (and some times rightly so) labelled as extremely feisty birds earning them the fear (or worse L) of many a human. However, working with these majestic creatures, we have come to see them as extremely astute judges of humans, quickly determining who they can “dominate” and who they cannot. And be warned—they know whether your bravado is real or whether you are just pretending.

But back to our dear Bendigo: a Chinese goose is characterised by the signature knob on top of the bill. They are known to be talkative guys and gals (which dear Bendigo most certainly is) and their long slender arched necks, coupled with their unusual colouring, makes for a most beautiful creature indeed. And to cap all this off, Bendigo is one of the sweetest, most gentle of birds—happy to share the company of your lap and welcome the caresses from your hand.

We sincerely thank the Bendigo Animal Hospital and Dr Jessica Coates for ensuring a safe and happy outcome for Bendigo.

A feasibility study has released which looks at the potential for further development at the Ben Lomond ski field in north eastern Tasmania. It is called Investment in Ben Lomond Skifield Northern Tasmania. It was produced for a range of clients including local government councils, Tourism Northern Tasmania, the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service and the Ben Lomond Committee. The committee is composed of the club / lodge and business operators at Ben Lomond and acts as a lobby group for the Ben Lomond skifield.

It proposes some significant developments be undertaken on the plateau in order to make the ski fields viable and extend the ‘green season’ attraction of the mountain. It identifies the likely financial costs of these developments without suggesting a source of finance. It points out that the development will lead to economic benefits across north western Tasmania rather than just the skifield itself. However, while noting the environmental impacts which could come with these developments, it makes no attempt to quantify these.

The report says

In order for Ben Lomond ski field to successfully compete in today’s competitive marketplace as a snow destination and support tourism growth to the region, it will need to “guarantee” snow and reposition itself as an exciting value for money snow experience for 6 – 8 weeks of the year for families and young people”....

"IndyWatch Feed Nsw": Western NSW & Far West Health Libraries Blog: Quality of care in Australian hospitals lacks oversight "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Australia needs to collect more information to measure the quality of care that hospitals provide to patients nationally, an OECD report says. The OECD's review of Australia's health system, to be released on Monday, said that it was performing "remarkably well" despite its "fragmented nature" and "sometimes strained" relationship between federal, state and territory governments over health funding.

Australia was the OECD's fifth most obese country, it said, and its health system would in future have to deal with an increasing number of patients with diabetes and other chronic conditions.

While Australia had improved its national standards for health care, it said: "A surprising lack of data on the quality and outcomes of care marks out Australia from its peers."

The children's mezze plate is what I make on "easy dinner night" (that or eggs + soldiers) - lots of fresh vegies, avocado on sourdough, hummus and olives. Every piece of nutritional information I have read has stressed the importance of children eating good fats with raw vegies so they are easily digested and absorbed. Poet will have a cup of chicken broth + soba noodles with this plate and Che will have a generous serve of feta on his sourdough (becasue try as I might, he's not a fan of broth). I should also point out that yes, there are many foods that my children won't eat. My home is not immune to fussy foodies.

You know the picture: hungry, tired children, a screaming baby and a messy kitchen with no dinner in sight. Uninspiring, isn't it.

Last week I decided to do something about it. Daylight savings had really thrown me in the past few weeks and as a result I was preparing and serving dinner far later that I cared for. It was stressful and strained - every night. So, on Sunday I announced on facebook that the best thing for everyone involved would be a 4:30pm dinner. It was one of those comments made on a whim and yet the response motivated me to make early dinners an everyday occurrence. It turns out that early dinners are what many mothers do in order to maintain their sanity. Yes it requires forethought and a certain amount of organisation but the rewards are plentiful.

Dear Minister,
RE: RESOLUTION OF MACQUARIE PARK FORUM âŹ
DONâŹ"T SPLIT MACQUARIE PARK
I am writing in my capacity as the Chair of the City of RydeâŹ"s Macquarie Park Forum to advise you of the deep concern expressed by members of the Forum at correspondence received by the City of Ryde from the Mayor of Parramatta Council to âŹStake over⏠large parts of the City of Ryde, in particular, Macquarie Park, in its bid to become âŹÜFit for the FutureâŹ".
At the Macquarie Park Forum last week, the following resolution was passed unanimously by its committee members:
Macquarie Park Forum strongly rejects ParramattaâŹ"s proposal to grab 50% of Ryde including the splitting of Macquarie Park and North Ryde. Macquarie Park Forum does not believe that Ryde should be split under the current reform proposals and that Macquarie Park and North Ryde should remain wholly within the current City of Ryde Boundaries. The Forum believes that the future demographic and geographic synergies for Macquarie Park and North Ryde are more appropriately aligned with other NSROC Councils
Clearly, the resolution does not support the Parramatta proposal, but leaves open contemplation of a future with other NSROC Councils.
Parramatta CouncilâŹ"s proposal consumes two-thirds of Ryde in a revenue raising exercise. Of course the booming $10 Billion business economy of the Macquarie Park business district is highly attractive to Parramatta, a Council that is struggling to create an effective CBD. The City of Ryde has worked hard with this business hub over many years to achieve its success.

This is not just about Ryde Council protecting its turf. We all know Parramatta has ruined its commercial core by promoting and allowing super-high-rise residential developments in the CBD. We do not want to see the same thing happen to SydneyâŹ"s second largest CBD in Macquarie Park. Protecting the economy and preserving the 90,000 jobs in Ryde is our highest priori...

Exactly eight months ago I was squatting in the hospital corridor after experiencing on-and-off early labour for a week. I distinctly remember grasping the handrail on the wall and sinking myself right down towards the floor; swaying, sighing, breathing baby down. This went on for hours and as midnight came around I thought to myself: "All this bearing down is going to wreak havoc on my pelvic floor".

Eight hours later I gave birth with the assistance of a vacuum - my first assisted birth - and the Obstetrician was just as shocked as I was when she announced that I hadn't torn (surprisingly the only time I have torn is during my second birth - in the water - these things you can never predict). Granted, I came out of the birth relatively unscathed and whilst the initial recovery was easy I have noticed that the long-term effects cannot be ignored; my core and pelvic floor is in need of strengthening and my sacrum is soft and sore - very sore. Of course, it's all related, especially now that my cycle has returned.

Most women believe that it takes six weeks to recover from a vaginal birth. In my opinion, it takes a lot longer (my GP agrees with me). At your six week check-up its not uncommon to still feel sore, swollen and stretched. And your pelvic floor? Personally, I find that if I lift anything too heavy in those first few weeks or if I'...
