Bill Still: Still Report #1097 Trump Tromps Clinton in Social Media Support "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Good afternoon, I’m still reporting on fake polls. Hats off to Addison Riddleberger columns for assembling this social media data. The 2016 elections will be the elections social scientists will look back on as the turning point year – the year where an analysis of social media will prove more predictive than paid polling. Assuming that is a correct prediction, what does that mean for the future of the Trump-Clinton presidential race. All of these stats are as of Aug. 4th, 2016. Let’s go to the data – Facebook Likes: Trump: 10,174,358 – 65.4% Clinton: 5,385,959 – 34.6% ---- Facebook live stream posts (latest): Trump: 135,000 likes, 18,167 shares, 1,500,000 views = 1,653,167 total = 83.0% Clinton: 11,000 likes, 0 shares, 321,000 views = 332,000 total = 17.0% *note: almost half of Clinton FB posts, the top comments are from Trump supporters. However, top comments on Trump’s page are hardcore Trump supporters only. ---- Twitter : Trump: 10.6 million followers = 56.7% Clinton: 8.1 million followers = 43.3% ----- Youtube Live Stream (averages): Trump: 30,000 live viewers per stream = 98.4% Clinton: 500 live viewers per stream = 1.6% ----- Instagram: Trump: 2.2 million followers = 55.0% Clinton: 1.8 million followers = 45.0% ------- Reddit subscribers: Trump: 197,696 = 71.3% Clinton: 24,429 = 8.8% Hillary for Prison: 55,228 = 19.9% Bottom line: more than twice as many Reddit users think Clinton should be in jail as should become the next President of the United States. I’m still reporting from Washington. Good day.

Bill Still: Still Report #1098 – Dead Man Switch - But Snowden is “Fine” "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Good evening, I’m still reporting on Snowden. Is Edward Snowden dead or alive? According to his closest associate in the press, Glenn Greenwalt, Snowden is “fine”, but he refused to elaborate. Twitter started rattling about Snowden on Wednesday, Aug. 3, when Snowden tweeted out: “Did you work with me? Have we talked since 2013? Please recontact me securely, or talk to @bartongellmon. It’s time. https://co/AKmgF.AIDJ” Barton Gellmon is currently writing about Snowden’s time working in the intelligence community in order to “tell it truthfully.” This blew up speculation that Snowden may have had access to the Clinton missing emails that were sucked up by the world’s biggest vacuum cleaner at Fort Meade – better known as the NSA. Then, 2 days later, on Friday, what appeared to be a dead-man’s switch issued what looks like a PGP decryption key to Snowden’s 2-million Twitter followers consisting only of a 64 character code. [insert] That looks like a PGP decryption key to me. Such a key could unlock a treasure trove of documents that Snowden claims to still be holding onto, pending release at some point in the future, or in case of his demise. A dead-man switch is set up if a person holds some secretive information that they threaten to release if they don’t check into their computer account at a pre-set interval – typically 24 or 48 hours. Within minutes of being released on Twitter, the key was deleted. Then, adding to the air of an urgent mystery, several major torrent websites suddenly went dark. Then all was quiet until 06:25 this evening when Gellmon tweeted: “1. Everyone requesting proof of life for me and @Snowden, take a deep breath. 2. Some tweets have private meaning. 3. My @SecureDrop is up.” And that, my friends is 100% of what is know at this hour. Movie Director Oliver Stone has released a trailer for his upcoming fact-based film on Snowden which is slated for release on 16 September 2016. I’m still reporting from Washington. Good day.

Bill Still: Still Report #1096 - How Clinton Rigs the Polls "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Good morning, I’m still reporting on the invasion. To make any good invasion work, you have to have the element of surprise. And to have the element of surprise, you have to control the flow of information to the public. According to an insider at Nate Silver’s political advocacy group, 538, Donald Trump was right again. The system is rigged. The polls are rigged. According to an Aug. 2 interview in “Real. True. News.”, an unnamed source at 538 says that despite the brave front Hillary Clinton continues to display to the public, Democrats are in an absolute panic because Donald Trump has taken a commanding lead in nearly all demographic groups. But in the battle for hearts and minds, the information control game goes on without embarrassment about a basic lack of a tie to reality. For example, yesterday’s headline on “FiveThirtyEight” was “Trump’s Slump Deepens in Polls.” Therein, 538 head, Nate Silver, notes that Trump is trailing Clinton by 9 to 14 point margins now in the majority of big national polls, and he is predicting a Clinton win by 4 points on Nov. 8 and projects the odds of a Clinton win at 74% - her highest mark yet. This despite the latest USC Daybreak poll showing a less than 1% margin. How is this possible? Well, the insider gives us our first peek under the tent of Poll Control Central. He tells a different story - one of nation-wide collusion with the Clinton machine and poll-buying, first whispered of during Trump’s primary run. According to 538 guy: “Nate [Silver] is a liberal. No secret there. “It’s a big social club. The pollsters all work together.” When the RTN reporter questioned the conspiratorial nature of that concept, the 538 insider said: “Sure--what? You think it's . . . random? Come on. Who do you think pays for the polls? People who want results. “You're buying media. It's like ads or . . . I don't know. Like newspaper stories? You pay 30k for a poll of Florida, it says what you want." Interestingly he chose Florida for his exa.....

Marginal REVOLUTION: The Right to Try "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Right to Try legislation permits patients fighting a terminal illness to get access to not-yet-FDA-approved drugs. Thirty-one states have passed Right to Try legislation with massive shows of support but so far these laws are untested by the courts so it’s not clear whether they are anything but expressive. The massive support for Right to Try laws, however, suggests that there is demand for a better FDA as Bartley Madden writes:

Freedom is a powerful rallying call and 31 states have now passed Right To Try legislation with sky-high approval ratings by citizens.

…[But] the states do not have the legal authority to circumvent the FDA. Moreover, drug developers have a major disincentive to participate because, to survive, drug developers need to secure FDA approvals for their new drugs. And circumventing the FDA by providing not-yet-approved drugs to terminally-ill patients could easily slow or prevent FDA approvals.

…A better solution is Free To Choose Medicine (FTCM). It would solve the dilemma facing politicians who are pulled in one direction by citizens’ demands for more freedom and in the opposite direction by FDA proponents with demands for a highly-controlled process. A clear, brief explanation of FTCM is available on the Internet in the PowerPoint presentation, “Free To Choose Medicine and Right To Try.” It explains how we will all benefit from more freedom of choice.

First, the Free To Choose track (separate from the FDA’s conventional clinical testing track) enables patients and their doctors to make informed decisions about the use of FDA-approved drugs or not-yet-FDA-approved drugs. Patients, under the guidance of their doctors, would learn about...

The Wire: Handlooms Deserve a Place of Pride in the Textile Industry "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

Handloom Day is a good opportunity to stop and ask – why can’t we build on our unique strengths instead of blindly copying dominant trends?

Credit: Indi Samarajiva/Flickr CC BY 2.0

Credit: Indi Samarajiva/Flickr CC BY 2.0

India has the world’s largest number of handloom weavers and an extremely rich heritage of handloom products. Until only a few decades ago, we also had the most diverse cotton varieties, providing the most suitable raw material for handloom weaving.

Despite such obvious and impressive strengths, India has not been able to ensure sustainable and satisfactory livelihoods for handloom weavers. The grim reality today is that an overwhelming majority of handloom weavers are living in poverty, while many others have left the occupation based on intricate skills to toil as construction workers and rickshaw pullers. Several have also migrated out of areas earlier known as famous handloom centres.

What is more, the raw material base of the handloom industry – several region-specific cotton varieties suitable for handloom weaving – has been destroyed. Cotton cultivation is now dominated by American cotton varieties not suitable for handlooms and, more recently, by the problematic genetically modified BT cotton. As many natural forests have been destroyed and/or replaced by monoculture plantations, the potential of sericulture to support silk handlooms has also reduced.

In the WTO trade regime of very low tariffs, indiscriminate imports of mechanised imitations of handloom products have increased rapidly, taking away the market for original handloom weavers.

Thus the crucial areas of raw material supply and marketing are increasingly threatened. The...

Signs of the Times: CNN embedding reporters with Syria terrorists - legitimizing Al Qaeda and suicide bombing "IndyWatch Feed World"

As the battle for Aleppo gathers momentum and the encircled terrorist factions respond violently to the strangulation of their supply lines and diminishment of their territory in eastern Aleppo, CNN goes to extraordinary lengths to obfuscate US connections to these terror gangs, romanticise the role of terror in Syria and even more astonishingly "normalise" suicide bombers and promote the re-branded Al Nusra as the new "moderates". Al Nusra Front (aka Al Qaeda in Syria) under new nomenclature suddenly become 'freedom fighters' (sounds familiar) and the new 'reasonable option' in the US mainstream media and the US voting public barely seem to notice? On August 2nd 2016, as the Syrian Arab Army made serious advances on the ground against the NATO and GCC-backed terrorist factions occupying the eastern sectors of Aleppo, the Al Qaeda affiliate in Syria, Jabhat Al Nusra made the announcement that it was changing the name of the group. Naturally, CNN ran with this story almost immediately. This re-branding also coincides with the agreement between Russia and the US to finally combine forces in combating Al Qaeda/Al Nusra fighting inside Syria. Here we can see the true function of CNN in the conflict theatre - to help sculpt the US government narrative - and to carefully nudge the public perception along those lines.

A nameless Australian man has gained internet stardom in a relatively short span of time due to the educational offerings he shares on his YouTube channel, Primitive Technology. Using nothing more than his hands, he’s shown viewers how to make everything from iron to charcoal and is constantly creating and building things with primitive tools.

Inquisitr surmises that it’s his no-gloating, no-nonsense approach that has resulted in him becoming a sensation around the world. Alternative News Network: Unvaccinated Children Appear To Be Immune To The Mysterious Virus Currently Spreading In The Midwest "IndyWatch Feed World"

INQUISITR The mysterious virus known as EV-D68 had spread across the Midwest at a rapid rate.

Many children had been hospitalized with the virus, about 475 in Kansas City alone, and there is no known vaccine to lessen the effects of the virus or protect those that had yet to acquire it.

EV-D68 had created an outbreak in Colorado, Missouri, Utah, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, and four more states in the Midwest. The symptoms can mimic those of the influenza virus, but can have a much more dire impact on those that fall ill. Dr. Mary Anne Jackson, the hospital’s division director for infectious disease shared her concern with CNN.

“It’s worse in terms of scope of critically ill children who require intensive care. I would call it unprecedented. I’ve practiced for 30 years in pediatrics, and I’ve never seen anything quite like this,”

Bill Still: Still Report #1085 – Why Trump Resists Accurate Polling "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

We’ve all noticed the phenomenon this year – even if we haven’t given it a name. Polling is consistently underrating the strength of the Donald Trump vote – a strength that doesn’t show up until the election results come in. And Democrats are deeply concerned that this may result in an unseen tsunami conservative vote in November. The Reuters/Ipsos poll team are so concerned about this problem that yesterday they announced that they are changing the wording of their presidential preference poll to try to adjust for the Trump effect. According to Maurice Tamman, head of data mining at Reuters in New York: “At times, the Reuters/Ipsos poll showed Clinton with a lead over Trump as wide as about 12 percentage points … five percentage points higher than Clinton’s lead in some other comparable polls.” Tamman and his team discovered that giving respondents the option of picking Trump or Clinton or “Neither” candidate, tended to show lower percentages for Trump – so they have now taken the “neither” question out. This may not solve the problem entirely. Have you noticed how few Trump bumper stickers there are on vehicles this year, or how few Trump yard signs are on display? American voters have changed their political preference habits. They are much more hesitant to admit their support for Trump. For example, the gold standard in polling was always thought to be the live phone interview. However, pollsters have now discovered that robo-phone calls tend to more accurately capture support for Trump, but even they still fall short. The problem may be rooted in security concerns - fear. Many Trumpers have reported the destruction of Trump yard signs in violent ways – ways never seen before in American politics. In the past, there has always been an undefined line of acceptable behavior over which even staunch political partisans dared not cross. But fear has now destroyed that line and the political openness it protected. Interestingly, this problem even goes beyond the T....

La Paz Group: Grubby Animal Feed "IndyWatch Feed World"

4980

Source: The Guardian

Two Georgia Tech graduates (who also happen to be cousins), Sean Warner and Patrick Pittaluga, are breeding and selling an insect many people consider revolting in order to provide a more sustainable substitute for animal feed (if you are about to eat a meal, I recommend postponing this article for a later, food-free, time). The insect they are growing is larvae, specifically black soldier fly larvae. Grubbly Farms, the name of their company, dries the larvae and sells them whole as chicken treats. This is a more sustainable protein and fat source for chickens, pigs and farmed seafood compared to the more popular animal feed that is based on fish, called fish meal.

Around 75% of the fish used in [conventional fish meal] are wild-caught species of small fish such as anchovies, herring and sardines. Demand for these species will likely increase as the world relies more on fish farming – and less on depleting wild fish stocks – to feed the growing appetite for seafood.

Grubbly Farms’ business plan isn’t just about creating more nutritious and sustainable animal feed, Warner said. It’s also looking to tackle America’s billion-dollar problem with food waste – produce and leftover foods being tossed away by businesses and homes and clogging up landfills at the rate of 52m tons per year. Warner is feeding the larvae fruit and vegetable pulp from a local juicery, and the company has also recently started working with a bakery t...

New Eastern Outlook: Middle East: Facts About the Alleged and Actual Usage of Chemical Weapons "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

345345345345The alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria has once again been used by Western media sources in the propaganda war against Damascus and Moscow. And it’s no wonder, since we’ve been witnessing such claims on the regular basis made by all sorts of paid “activists” based in Washington and London. And the string of groundless accusations against Moscow and Damascus is only getting worse, as we are being told that Russian planes have been using chemical weapons in their strikes against ISIS in Syria. The last such wave of accusations was launched by Reuters and other Western media sources that announced that the representatives of the so-called Syrian Civil Defence reported that an unknown aircraft dropped containers with poisonous gas near the crash site of the downed Russia’s Mi-8, which allegedly resulted in 30 men being exposed to poisonous substances. Western journalists would note that the Syrian Civil Defence militants suspected it was chlorine but could not verify the type of gas used.

This disinformation campaign resembles a similar provocation that would be remembered as the “Ghouta chemical attack” in the history of the Syrian war. This attack allegedly occurred on the night of August 21, 2013, when, during the offensive of pro-government forces, Western media sources started screaming that Assad’s soldiers used chemical weapons against radical militants. The purpose of that disinformation campaign was...

Johannesburg: After years of wrangling and debates among African leaders, the movement to end female genital mutilation (FGM) is gaining real momentum, with a new action plan signed this week by Pan African Parliament (PAP) representatives and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) to end FGM as well as underage marriage.

The UNFPA has already trained over 100,000 health workers to deal specifically with aiding victims of FGM, while tens of thousands of traditional leaders have also signed pledges against the practice.

The agreement followed a PAP Women’s Caucus meeting with UNFPA representatives in Johannesburg on July 29-30.

Kicking off the meeting, PAP President Roger Dang said, “PAP is determined to help and be part of stakeholders to come up with solutions to this practice. This is in line with the mandate of PAP to defend and promote gender balance and people living with disability.”

The PAP is the legislative organ of the African Union, and has up to 250 members rep...

Alternative News Network: Federal Agency Suggests That Gadsden Flag May Be Racist "IndyWatch Feed World"

By Joshua Krause

gadsden flag wikimedia

In recent years the Gadsden flag has become increasingly popular among conservatives and libertarians. And since so many leftists view those ideologies as racist and hateful, they’ve come to view that flag in the same light, regardless of it’s historical context.

Which may explain a recent decision made by a federal agency known as the Equal Employment Commission. They’re responsible for handling harassment claims made by federal employees, and earlier this year they received a complaint from a black Postal Service employee. He claimed that the federal government had subjected him to racial discrimination because a coworker was allowed to a wear a hat with a Gadsden flag emblem.

As for why he thought the flag was racist, he cited the fact that the creator of the flag, Christopher Gadsden, was a slave owner, and because the flag was used by Tea Party activists. In reality, the flag has no racial connotations, and not just because being a Tea Party activist doesn’t automatically make someone a racist. The flag was created as a military banner during the Revolutionary War. It has no racial context.

The Equal Employment Commission decided that the flag wasn’t racist, but their decision came with a caveat. They said that the Gadsden flag could be “interpreted to convey racially-tinged messages in some contexts,” and that “Certainly, Compl...

New Eastern Outlook: Hillary’s Speech: The Ultimate Brain-Wash "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

484386695On the last day of the Democratic Convention, Hillary Clinton dressed in white in a remarked similarity to Melania Trump when she spoke at the Republican Convention. In response to Donald Trump’s motto: Make America Great Again Hillary Clinton declared, “America is great because America is good!” to ecstatic cheers from Democratic Convention delegates, who after four days of speeches, were still ready to swallow more bull.

Brain-washed” was a popular American expression in the seventies and eighties, that mainly referred to the Soviet people who believed Communist propaganda, and it urgently needs to make a come-back. The number of lies the American people have swallowed since Vladimir Putin started wiping up the mess Washington’s man in Moscow, Boris Yeltsin, made before bowing out clutching his vodka bottle, is staggering.

The word ‘propaganda’ just doesn’t cut it when we’re talking about this amount of outright lies. ‘Fact-checking’ has become part of the mainstream media, but it’s more often used to split hairs than to challenge false narratives, for example disputing Hillary’s claim that ninety percent of all wealth goes to the one percent when it’s now ‘only’ 52%.

You may safely visit the Tuasan Falls in Camiguin in maybe 10 or 20 years. Do not go up there anymore, the risk to get killed by landslides and falling rocks is much too big. Before you read on, we recommend to read the first article “Concrete Madness in Camiguin” on May 12, 2015.

This spring had been extremely dry in Camiguin. During almost 4 months no rain drop fell on the small island in the Bohol Sea. Now, in full Habagat season, heavy tropical rainfalls happen every second day. The damaged hill slopes, deprived from their natural fixation, slide and crash down everywhere. Before the machines dug into the volcanic slopes, roots of grass, scrubs and trees stabilized the hills. After the last eruption of Hibok-Hibok volcano in July 1953, nature needed many years to shape the slopes and stabilize them.

We Are Change: How The FBI Motivated A Terrorist Attack "IndyWatch Feed World"

We Are Change

According to an affidavit filed in Federal court last Thursday an FBI agent motivated an ISIS terrorist attack the “Draw Muhammad cartoon event” last year in Garland, Texas.
He allegedly sent a text message to Elton Simpson one of the ISIS shooters that said “Tear up Texas.” “U know what happened in Paris,” Simpson responded. “So that goes without saying… No need to be direct.”

FBI-false-flag

The FBI agents text messages were included in an indictment, released Thursday, of Erick Jamal Hendricks, 35 years old, of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Hendricks was charged with conspiring to provide material support to ISIS. Accused of the will to recruit Americans to form an ISIS terror cell on secret compounds inside the U.S.
Hendricks was also unknowingly in contact with an undercover agent, whom he introduced to one of the Draw Muhammad attackers, according to the FBI.

A former FBI agent weighed in on the matter saying that it was inappropriate for an FBI agent or cooperating witness to provoke or inspire a person to commit a violent act.

“It would certainly be inappropriate for an FBI undercover agent or cooperating witness to provoke or inspire or urge a person to commit an act of violence,
The affidavit raises a lot more questions than it answers, and I would hope that overseers within Congress and the Justice Department would want to take a hard look at the scope of this investigation.”

Chicago: Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said on Saturday that videos of the police shooting a black man in the city last month indicate three officers may have violated the department’s policies.

Authorities on Friday released videos that captured the moments before and after police shot Paul O’Neal, 18, on July 28, but not the shooting itself because a police officer’s body camera was not recording. No firearms were found on O’Neal, who was shot in the back, according to police.

Beirut: Syrian rebels broke through to besieged opposition-held areas in eastern Aleppo on Saturday in an assault on a major government military complex meant to end a month-long siege, insurgents and a monitoring group said.

Pro-government media outlets denied the siege had been broken and a US State Department official said the situation was “too fluid” to comment. India Today TV has exposed how Dalits are not allowed to enter Hindu houses of worship.

Regardless of constitutional freedom and protection, Dalits in Gujarat suffer from religious alienation. This ostracisation of the community is drawn from an antiquated belief that stigmatises them and exalts their isolation as purification.

According to an investigation by India Today, temples in Gujarat shun Dalits in order to preserve the piety of the faith’s upper-caste elders.

Priests of a Kali temple in the Kota village of Gandhinagar segregate ‘upper’ caste worshippers from the ‘low’ caste, making the latter sit at the temple doorstep where a separate vase is placed for them at the sill to take the tilak from.

The priests even refuse to touch them.

When asked by India Today if the priests would give the Dalits tilaks, one of them refused, saying, “They’ll do it with their own hands. None of us does that”.

Between the doorway and the Gods stands a firewall that Dalits can’t cross. Even the prasad is delivered to them separately.

“If they sit where they are sitting now [which is outside of the sanctum], we do nothing. Bu...

The terror has arrived in Europe. France was the scene of a wave of terror attacks in a short time. After Nice in June this year Saint Etienne-du-Rouvary, a small town in Normandy, followed a month later. That France is the focus of terror came clear since the attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in January, 2015. The attacks in Paris in November 2015 that killed 130 people and injured more than 350, were a sign that a new chapter of terrorism was opened in Europe.

It was not likely that the Islamist-motivated terrorism is limited to France. The investigations have shown that these networks have been built up over long periods of time and along with Belgium and Italy also have reached Germany. The security agencies realized it was only a matter of time before terrorism would reach Germany as well. Würzburg, Munich, Ansbach, Reutlingen, attacks on German soil at short intervals, have triggered a hitherto unprecedented uncertainty in the population. Politically particularly explosive is the fact that the Islamic State (IS), admitted to two of these attacks without...

: The Booming of a Shadow Banking System in China "IndyWatch Feed War"

Photo: dpa

Photo: dpa

Originally appeared at DWN, translated by John T. Sumner exclusively for SouthFront

China’s shadow banks are busy to expand their influence regarding the domestic financial markets. Last year alone, funding under their maintenance spiraled upwards by almost a third. According to some estimations, capital to the tune of 80 percent of China´s overall economic output would circulate within this shady market.

Shadow banks seem to fulfill an increasingly important role within the Chinese financial system. According to the American rating agency Moody’s, assets managed by them have increased by about 30 percent in 2015. How Moody’s has been able to reckon these figures, remains unclear because the shadow banking system mostly takes place outside the established banking and hardly ever becomes subject to regulation by the state.

According to Moody’s, shadow banks managed around 7.3 trillion euros in 2015 – which corresponds to about 78 percent of the total GDP of China, equaling about 27 percent of all bank deposits. In 2011, this figure was still around 17 percent.

The government in Beijing considers this sector a threat to the financial stability and has been trying for some time to regulate the chaotic market and to prohibit risky transactions. “But despite these efforts, the share of shadow banks in lending and in capital contribution has rapidly expanded because companies with poor solvency rather turn to alternative sources of funding and because in...

Insurrection News: Greece: Another parcel bomb sent to a judge "IndyWatch Feed War"

Parcel-Bomb

According to the Greek press, on July 28 police reported another parcel bomb was sent to a state judge, in this case it was sent to the bastard P. Houzouris, who received a parcel bomb at home packed with nails and razor blades. [1]

After finding the suspicious package that was disguised as a book, the judge notified police. An anti-explosives squad then proceeded to detonate the device.

According to police, the parcel bomb was similar to the one that was sent in June to judge Isidore Ponga who presided over the judicial council that rejected a 2015 request for the release of Evi Statiri (wife of Gerasimos Tsakalos, member of the Conspiracy of Cells of Fire). [2]

The Greek press and the police are again trying to link our comrades from the Conspiracy of Cells of Fire to these attacks, this time pointing the finger at the comrade Christos Tsakalos who referred in a statement to a major trial that the judge P. Houzouris is presiding over.

The statement in question was published in Greece at the end of June. In it the comrade refers to the trial that the judge who received the parcel bomb presides over. The trial is known as the ‘Noor 1′ trial, named after the boat on which a shipment of heroin was found. Comrade Christos, along with pointing out the inquisitor role of the judges also expressed in his statement: “Faced with the arrogance of the judges and the authorities who enjoy life like small gods in the throne of their offices, we must use the strategy of the anarchist urban guerrillas’....

There were low intensity tremors on Tuesday morning on the coastal parts of Brava, which is the smallest island of the country, causing no injuries or damage, according to the weather service. It was felt at Cova Joana where, as a precaution, authorities began the evacuation operation targeting some 300 people, the Interior Minister, Paulo Rocha announced at a press conference in Praia. "Data from the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics demonstrate the intensifying seismic activity on the island of Brava. If this activity continues, we can possibly have a volcanic eruption in the coming hours," Rocha said.

Death of the two-party system: Republican bigwigs formally endorse Hillary Clinton David Icke latest headlines

‘Whatever happens on November 8, Donald Trump can claim this achievement: His candidacy exposed the fact that the two-party system of Democrats and Republicans is an illusion. What we have in the U.S. instead is a corrupt polity where Democrat and Republican élites form a single ruling party, as Professor Emeritus Angelo M. Codevilla stunningly asserted in 2010. (See “America’s Bipartisan Ruling Class vs. the People“) The evidence? The following list of Republican bigwigs who, by publicly declaring their support for Hillary Clinton — the pathological liar who had accomplished nothing as secretary of state, but violated U.S. laws and jeopardized national security with her unsecured private email server; lied about and left four Americans to die in Benghazi; and supports the absolute “right” of women to kill their unborn — instead of Republican Party presidential nominee Donald Trump, have peeled away their masks, revealing their true faces.’ Read more: Death of the two-party system: Republican bigwigs formally endorse Hillary Clinton

Theresa May to Bribe British Public to Accept Fracking in Their Area David Icke latest headlines

Insurrection News: The Netherlands: Mayor issues area bans for anarchists "IndyWatch Feed War"

netherlands

Today (3-8-2016) several anarchists in the city of The Hague, The Netherlands, but also in other cities, received police visits. The police delivered letters containing the intentions of mayor Jozias van Aartsen to prohibit anarchists from setting foot in the Schilderswijk neighbourhood in The Hague for the coming two months.

The letters stated that the anarchists were to blame for “structural nuisance”. This nuisance would consist of unannounced demonstrations, disturbing of the peace and the disturbing of demonstrations. The letters contain a list of allegations to which people are being associated to or for which they have been arrested. These allegations differ per person. They range from squatting, participation in spontaneous demonstrations, pasting posters and destroying a prison fence. What the anarchists have in common is that they are all active against institutionalized racism, ethnic profiling and the racist The Hague police force. All of them were also preemptively arrested on the 27th of June, after a demonstration commemorating Mitch Henriquez who was murdered by police last year.

The letter also states that “there was a presence of people associated with Anti-Fascist Action (AFA)” during the four nights of rioting last year after the police murder on Mitch Henriquez, and that they “had an inciting and catalyzing role in escalating the demonstration to the point of a riot”. It is also claimed that people linked to AFA “have breached the peace multiple times in the Schilderswijk”.

That the contents of these letters is mainly based on presumptions and vague accusations does not surprise us. Neither does the fact that a lot of these accusations have themselves been dropped by the public prosecutor because they were simply not concrete enough for a pr......

Zen Gardner: Authenticity: Inhabiting Wildly Tender Revolution "IndyWatch Feed World"

by Melissa la Flamme

RebelleSociety

When you live from your intuitive core, your belly, your heart, and let your soul lead and spirit guide you, your words and actions will be naturally subversive.

You will go to your edge. You will soften. Become wildly tender.

Question is, will you wholly inhabit your own revolution? In beauty? This inner revolution is a perpetual ceremony of the heart. It’s what you are for.

When you are real, cooked down to essence, rather than half-baked to get approval, to look good, the projections from others may fly, seek you out and try to stick to you. Don’t let them. Instead, let your authenticity support you in carrying on wholehearted, vulnerable conversation to resolve whatever arises. It is hard work. Uncomfortable. Deeply human. Can be harrowing. And often downright delicious. Intimate. Naked.

Courageous work marked by your solid presence. Here. Now.

I’d rather be whole than good, C.G. Jung said. And by whole, he meant real, messy, ensouled, deeply human, heart broken open with compassion — flowing first to ourselves, to resource and prepare to let it flow widely to others.

Being too comfortable, amenable, pliable to the point of contorting yourself, is a ticket to selling your soul right up the river. Don’t buy it. When you live from your own knowing-ness, from your gut and your wildly-rooted intelligence, you feel alive. Genuinely, madly, creatively alive.

Being real — true to your Self, your soul — is gritty. And grit causes friction, makes fire to clear the way for living a revolutionary act. This act is marked by action that the earth and the soul of the world are crying out for. And the cry is going to get louder, more pain-filled, and grievous, before enough souls answer wholeheartedly.

When you get real, it is actually not about you. You...

The Fifth Column: What We Need To Learn From Native Cultures About Climate Adaptation "IndyWatch Feed World"

Planet Earth, (TFC)— When it comes to climate change, now is the time to react and develop defenses. Unfortunately, very few western resources are allocated to prepare for future environmental challenges. That’s not the case in areas inhabited by indigenous peoples, who’re already dealing with environmental changes. Recent months have seen adaptation techniques field tested in indigenous areas, for eventual use elsewhere. One of the many questions going forward, however, is whether progress itself is sustainable.

As important as the actual technologies is including as many voices as possible in climate conversations. Climate change affects humanity more than any war, or plague. In fact, grimmer predictions for the future suggest it may eventually cause those things. According to Glacier Hub, whereas indigenous peoples occupy 65% of earth’s land, they’re rarely included in climate debate.

Even the 2015 Paris climate talks were largely void of indigenous voices, and that’s a problem. A recent piece by Indiana and Sorbonne Nouvelle University researches called “Environmental Governance For All” argues that real change can’t come without 100% human inclusion.

According to Glacier Hub, the Paris agreements didn’t mention indigenous peoples or their climate plights. Without indigenous voices, any and all climate adaptation conversations are missing a key component. Indigenous cultures have long retained insights and knowledge matching their wester...

The Fifth Column: CPS refuses to prosecute UK Govt for plotting Libyan renditions to torture "IndyWatch Feed World"

United Kingdom (Reprieve) – British prosecutors have today stuck by a decision not to bring charges against the UK Government over its role in the 2004 kidnap and rendition of two Libyan families, including a pregnant woman and children aged 6 to 12.

The torture victims had demanded a review of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decision in June 2016 not to bring any prosecutions, despite finding that a senior British intelligence official was involved in the operation and had – to a limited extent – sought political approval for it.

The CPS took two years to consider the original police investigation which produced a 28,000 page file. However, it completed the victim’s review in just seven weeks. The review staff were junior to the team who made the original decision not to charge, putting them in the position of having to challenge their superior’s decisions on a high profile case.

The al-Saadi and Belhaj families were kidnapped, forced onto planes and flown to Colonel Gaddafi’s Libya in a joint MI6-CIA operation in March 2004. Sami al Saadi and Abdul-Hakim Belhaj were both prominent Gaddafi opponents who had been living with their families in exile, and suffered years of torture after their forcible return.

Mr Belhaj’s wife, Fatima Boudchar, has told of how, despite being pregnant at the time of the rendition, she was chained to a wall in a secret CIA prison – or ‘black site’ – in Bangkok, before being bodily taped to a stretcher for the entire 17-hour flight to Libya. One of Mr al Saadi’s children, Khadija, who was 12 years old at the time, has described how she was so terrified during the kidnap that she passed out.

Evidence of the UK’s central role in the operation emerged after the fall of Colonel Gaddafi in 2011, when documents discovered by Human Rights Watch in the office of his spy chief, Moussa Koussa, were found to include correspondence from......

The Fifth Column: Ministers urged to correct claims over Saudi juveniles executions "IndyWatch Feed World"

Saudi Arabia (Reprieve) – International human rights organization Reprieve is urging the UK Government to correct inaccurate statements it has made about three juveniles facing beheading in Saudi Arabia.

Ali al Nimr, Dawoud al Marhoon and Abdullah al Zaher were aged 17, 17 and 15 (respectively) when they were sentenced to death for alleged involvement in protests calling for reform in the Kingdom.

However, the UK Government has wrongly maintained that “under Saudi Law they are considered to have been adult at the time.”

This assertion – made most recently in a UK human rights assessment of Saudi Arabia, updated on 21 July – is directly at odds with the Saudi Government’s own public claims that their own law defines a child as any person under the age of 18.  In their most recent report to the UN’s Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the Saudi Government said that:

“Looking at the statutes adopted in Saudi Arabia, it is clear that the definition of the child in them is consistent with the requirements of article 1 of the Convention. The Child Protection Act defines the child as ‘any person under the age of eighteen’, as does the Act to combat crimes of trafficking in persons. Furthermore, the juvenile is defined in the criminal law regulations on arrest and the regulations on juvenile detention centres as any person who has not reached the age of eighteen.”

While Saudi law continues to allow some limited scope for a judge to determine that someone under 18 can be treated as an adult – in contradiction to Saudi Arabia’s international obligations –...

The Fifth Column: ISIS’s war: real to virtual, far to near "IndyWatch Feed World"

Middle East (openDemocracy) – A series of attacks beyond its core territory reveals Islamic State’s capacity to adapt and to plan for the long term.

In Libya and Iraq, military campaigns against ISIS are intensifying. But in assessing the movement’s condition, a wider view is also needed.

On the second day of the new round of air-attacks against ISIS forces in the Libyan coastal city of Sirte, United States marine corps AV8B strike-aircraft were launched from the USS Wasp, an amphibious-warfare vessel. Military sources say that the operation would most likely last weeks, and only end when those Libyan militias loosely aligned to the government of national accord in Tripoli succeed in taking control of the city.

When the current assault on Sirte started in May 2016, rapid initial progress was reported. The city, it seems, would soon be liberated. In practice the assault slowed to a crawl as the government-backed forces suffered 300 killed and many wounded, hence the need for US air-power. It now seems likely that ISIS has already withdrawn many of its paramilitaries and dispersed them to other towns and cities. Thus, even if Sirte is taken in the coming weeks, it will be just one episode in an ongoing conflict.

In Iraq, meanwhile, government forces have consolidated their control of Fallujah amidst reports that the city is now rigidly ‘policed’ by Shi’a militias to the anger of many Iraqi ...

The Fifth Column: The Successful Hunger Strike That Changed Colombia’s University of Tolima "IndyWatch Feed World"

Tolima, Colombia (GVO) – Between July 6 and July 15, 2016, nine people at the University of Tolima, Colombia — students, professors and staff members — organized a hunger strike to protest the serious administrative, financial, democratic, and leadership crisis occurring at this higher education institution, for which they held the Dean José Herman Muñoz Ñungo directly responsible.

The group initiated the strike after having exhausted all proper channels of negotiation. Among other things, their demands included the dean’s response to a list of 21 questions and his resignation. Not only was the dean reluctant to leave his position and respond to the questions, but the University Governing Board also kept silent, prolonging the hunger strike up to nine days.

Thanks to the mediation of a committee of local people and the presence of the Ministry of Labor, an agreement was signed at the cessation of the strike on July 31 and it included the dean’s resignation and a written acceptance of various petition points.

Blaming Washington of becoming “all the more pronounced” to topple the North Korean communist regime by “mobilizing all nuclear war hardware,” Pyongyang warned the US against exacerbating tensions in the region that could ignite a nuclear war. Terrorists Shoot Down Russian Planes With U.S. TOW Missiles After McCain Calls For It David Icke latest headlines

‘In three and a half decades, the United States has come full circle in terms of its publicly stated strategy overseas. From the late 1970s when the U.S. armed the Mujihadeen “rebels” to draw in and fight the Soviets in Afghanistan to 2016 when the U.S. has given Syrian “rebels” (aka moderate terrorists) TOW missiles to shoot down Russian aircraft over Syria, the U.S. and Russia are engaged in a proxy war – at least this time entirely at the impetus of the U.S. and its allies – where the people of a target nation pay the ultimate price. Recently, a Russian MI-8 helicopter was shot down over Syria in the Idlib region. The helicopter and its crew were on a humanitarian mission even according to the pro-terrorist Syrian Observatory For Human Rights. Although Western outlets and “think tanks” are attempting to claim that the helicopter was on a combat mission, no one outside of NATO countries believes this and the evidence produced by these pro-war analysts is scant to say the least.’ Read more: Terrorists Shoot Down Russian Planes With U.S. TOW Missiles After McCain Calls For It

How I Know for Sure I am Not Yet Enlightened David Icke latest headlines

‘Prakriti, form what are called the three gunas. I know for sure I am not yet enlightened because, of the three, one is always predominant: tamas (darkness or inertia), rajas (activity or change), or sattva (beingness or joy). One might mistakenly assume that if my mind were in a state of sattva or ‘joy’ all the time, that then would be enlightenment, but that’s the sticky, tricky thing about the play of maya. Our consciousness is not the perceptions we have of the world, but a ‘backdrop’ of infinite possibility before anything ever manifests as experience, or thought – as things, people, or circumstances we experience. Most of us, anyhow, can only maintain a state of sattva for a brief period of time, then our highly unstable, monkey mind will go back to being busy, and agitated, or lethargic as if we’re inebriated.’ Read more: How I Know for Sure I am Not Yet Enlightened

Land Destroyer: Confirmed: "Draw Mohammed" Contest Attackers Were Managed by FBI "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

August 7, 2016 (Tony Cartalucci - LD) - To some the 2015 shooting in Garland Texas at a "Draw Mohammed" contest organized by state-sponsored agitators seemed all too convenient.

The protest was meant to prove Muslims were irrational and violent, and amid the protest two armed men did indeed attack, both killed by police who were already on the scene.

The event was meant to reinforce the narrative that Islam is an irrational and dangerous ideology, that Muslims pose a danger to America and the West in general, and that both Islam and Muslims should be actively resisted culturally, politically, and militarily.

It was the culmination of years of agitation through networks maintained by Washington politicians and policymakers, particularly those who have - ironically - not only engineered America's various and unending wars begun during the so-called "War on Terror," but who have also armed and funded some of the most dangerous terrorist organizations on Earth via America's Persian Gulf allies.

Now it is revealed that not only was the protest organized by politicians and organizations associated with Washington, but the shooting was as well.

The two suspects were being directed by undercover FBI agents, one of which reportedly told one of the shooters shortly before the attack to "tear up Texas."

How Nikola Tesla Used ‘Spirituality’ & Philosophy To Learn About Reality, ‘Limitless’ Energy & Science David Icke latest headlines

‘Science works best when in harmony with nature. If we put these two together, we can discover great technologies that can only come about when the consciousness of the planet is ready to embrace them. This would give us a limitless source of energy, and would practically wipe out all poverty on the planet. The allegations threatened to further unsettle Temer’s months-old, center-right coalition [Xinhua]

The latest in a series of explosive scandals in the nation’s ongoing political crisis, Marcelo Odebrecht, the former chief executive of Latin America’s largest construction company, admitted in a plea bargain testimony that he personally oversaw illegal campaign donations for Brazil’s interim President Michel Temer in 2014.

Odebrecht, the scion of the family that controls the company, formally known as Odebrecht SA, was sentenced to 19 years in prison after being convicted of corruption and money laundering in the Petrobras case in March.

Brazilian newsweekly Veja reported it had seen a plea bargain statement where Odebrecht said Temer asked him for campaign funds in 2014 when he was vice president.

Odebrecht said he contributed 6 million reais ($1.8 million) to Temer’s re-election campaign, according to Veja.

New Delhi: The Indian arm of the global rights organisation Amnesty International has expressed its disappointment at the “slow progress” of the special investigation team (SIT) constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs to probe the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom.

Following a conclave held on June 23, ‘Insaaf 1984’, Amnesty International India drew up a list of recommendations from the participating speakers and submitted it to the MHA for necessary action.

The rights body has urged the Narendra Modi government to ensure that “the victims and survivors of the 1984 massacre get the justice and closure they have awaited for decades”.

Dividing its recommendations into various segments, the organisation’s first demand is for an “effective investigation”. To this end, it has asked the Centre to “ensure that the SIT conducts a prompt and transparent investigation into the cases, including by making its proceedings accessible to the media and the public, while allowing victims and witnesses to request confidential hearings to protect themselves from reprisal.”

It has also called for facilitating the participation of victims and witnesses from outside India, including through video-conferencing. This is important because in some cases, the accused had objected to this p...

Microsoft Pitches Technology That Can Read Facial Expressions at Political Rallies David Icke latest headlines

‘At both the Republican and Democratic conventions, Microsoft sponsored event spaces for the news outlet Politico. Politico, in turn, hosted a series of Microsoft-sponsored discussions about the use of data technology in political campaigns. And throughout Politico’s spaces in both Philadelphia and Cleveland, Microsoft advertised an array of products from “Microsoft Cognitive Services,” its artificial intelligence and cloud computing division. At one exhibit, titled “Realtime Crowd Insights,” a small camera scanned the room, while a monitor displayed the captured image. Every five seconds, a new image would appear with data annotated for each face — an assigned serial number, gender, estimated age, and any emotions detected in the facial expression. When I approached, the machine labeled me “b2ff” and correctly identified me as a 23-year-old male. It interpreted my facial expression as “neutral,” with a bit of “surprise.”’ Read more: Microsoft Pitches Technology That Can Read Facial Expressions at Political Rallies

Israeli authorities commit woman to psychiatric unit after she protested outside Justice Minister Shaked’s office David Icke latest headlines

‘Joelle Ben Simon, 55, has had her fair share of injustice. For almost 10 years she has been appealing against judgments from the religious and civil courts which resulted in her losing her villa and sleeping in a car with her son. Her case is a complicated one and has involved appeals against numerous judges and the rabbinical court. Two weeks ago Joelle met with a lawyer who saw how convoluted her case was. It is common for people who have suffered great injustice to “live” their story. They know it better than anyone, and can select pages, dates and events from memory. Joelle decided to protest. She went to the office of Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked and decided to camp outside.’ Read more: Israeli authorities commit woman to psychiatric unit after she protested outside Justice Minister Shaked’s office

The Last Great Stand: The Real Reason Putin Hates Obama and Clinton, and Wants Trump To Win (Video) "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Putin

In the following video, Putin reveals exactly why he cannot stand Barack Obama, and why it is clearly not in Russia’s best interests (or anyone else on the planet’s for that matter), for Hillary Clinton to become the next President of the United States. When referring to specific Obama/Clinton policy decisions that led directly to large boost in recruitment for ISIS (no, it wasn't a Donald Trump video as Hillary likes to say), Putin says:

"I consider this absolutely unprofessional politics… [their acts] are not grounded in facts in the real world."

For the most part, the sum total of what the majority of Americans know about Putin, we get largely from whatever our dishonest and corrupt mainstream media tells us. We also know the mainstream media is owned and controlled primarily by globalists (who hate Putin), and that they function as more of a propaganda arm for the Democrat Party, than they do as actual credible news sources.

New Eastern Outlook: George Soros: “Let’s Call the Terrorists a Taxi!” "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

43534534534Billionaire hedge fund mechanic George Soros has a finger in every political pie there is. If there is a crisis on our world, it’s a safe bet he’s had a hand in it. This is not news to most readers, but the intricacies of Soros’s operations surely are. Here is a first in a series of articles to illuminate a real arch villain. Today we will focus on Soros and the American presidency.

In America a surreal presidential race is winding toward its ultimate crescendo. In a symphony of unbelief, a people of a once great nation are serenaded by two bitterly sour notes droning in the air. “Hillary for president” leaves people of any real moral fortitude screaming inside their heads, as if they’ve been blasted with a shrieking air raid siren. As for Donald Trump’s bid for America’s highest office, jittery liberals and conservatives alike shudder at the thought of “The Donald’s” first state of the union address. Neither major candidate is what anyone would call “presidential”. Election 2016 is going exactly as manipulators like George Soros planned. Another presidency is set to be owned, lock-stock-and-barrel, by the biggest thieves in the world.

Donald Trump is the ideal fall guy to set up Hillary Clinton. Boisterous, controversial, and very scary, the notorious billionaire developer is like Ronald Reagan with a penchant for acting like the cartoon character Yosemite Sam. If Trump brought two six shooters to his next speech, and lifted himself off the ground by unloading both at his feet, scarcely anyone would be surprised. The reason he was chosen to run is transparent, no one else on Earth possesses the same divergent q.....

What Countries Will Hillary Attack if Named President? David Icke latest headlines

It’s terrifying to consider what actions an emotionally unstable neocon leader may do as US president, a notorious war hawk, a Wall Street tool beholden solely to powerful monied interests controlling her and husband Bill.’ She’s militantly anti-Russia, anti-China, anti-Iran, anti-peace and stability. Ignore her gender and duplicitous rhetoric. A 2nd Clinton co-presidency would be disastrous – perhaps homeland tyranny and global war with nuclear weapons threatening everyone. Nothing qualifies her for leadership, no redeeming features, plenty since the 1990s revealing her despicable record, pure evil by any standard – why she lacks credibility, popular support and trust, why common sense demands rejecting her.’ Read more: What Countries Will Hillary Attack if Named President?

'Thinking Through the Unthinkable': RAND Corporation Lays out Scenarios for US War with China David Icke latest headlines

‘A new study by the RAND Corporation titled “War with China: Thinking Through the Unthinkable” is just the latest think tank paper devoted to assessing a US war against China. The study, commissioned by the US Army, provides further evidence that a war with China is being planned and prepared in the upper echelons of the American military-intelligence apparatus. That the paper emerges from the RAND Corporation has a particular and sinister significance. Throughout the Cold War, RAND was the premier think tank for “thinking the unthinkable”—a phrase made notorious by RAND’s chief strategist in the 1950s, Herman Kahn. Kahn devoted his macabre book On Thermonuclear War to elaborating a strategy for a “winnable” nuclear war against the Soviet Union.’ Read more: ‘Thinking Through the Unthinkable’: RAND Corporation Lays out Scenarios for US War with China

Monsanto Losing Millions As Farmers In India Rebel, Plant Indigenous Seed David Icke latest headlines

‘Monsanto is losing millions on failed GM cotton. The company illegally pushed a form of Bt cotton into India and Africa more than a decade ago, but farmers are now pushing back by planting their own indigenous seed. Monsanto is accused of writing laws and then breaking them to enter the market in India, but after more than 300,000 farmer deaths between 1995 and 2013, many of them attributed to Monsanto, the company is finally paying for their misdeeds. The corporation’s greed is linked to farmer suicides throughout Maharashtra, considered the ‘Cotton Belt’ in India. The Indian government is now actively promoting the use of indigenous seed, and has called Monsanto out for profiteering illegally on Bt cotton seed.’ Read more: Monsanto Losing Millions As Farmers In India Rebel, Plant Indigenous Seed

‘Legislation involving DNA evidence that would permit local police to quickly test the genetic makeup of suspects in the field, without having to wait for or rely on technicians in an accredited laboratory, may soon be voted on in the House. As reported by NextGov, the bill focuses on a fairly new screening device that is roughly the size of a printer and is called Rapid DNA. BDS: game changer in Germany David Icke latest headlines

‘The Holocaust was the first historic event that touched my inner core as a human being. Perhaps this explains my early fascination with everything Jewish. In the 1990s, I lived for two years in Israel, where I volunteered in a center for adults with special needs. This was part of my German Zivildienst — a civilian substitute for conscientious objectors to then compulsory military service. I was what I now consider a naive, well-intentioned, liberal Zionist. It was not until I read Ilan Pappe’s 2006 book The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine that I realized Israel’s establishment involved the expulsion of 750,000 indigenous Palestinians.’ Read more: BDS: game changer in Germany

Marginal REVOLUTION: Which part of the world is most underrated in literary terms? "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

I asked that question of Michael Orthofer, and his answer was this:

Underrated, I would absolutely think the regional language and literature of India. I think surprisingly, even though, perhaps, English is the main literary language of India and a great deal is locally translated, even there much of the vernacular literature still isn’t available in English.

What one can see of it and also in part hear about it — we’re missing an awful lot. There is a literary culture there, especially, for example, in Bengali, but we’ve had that since Tagore. One of the remarkable things is Tagore won his Nobel prize over a hundred years ago, and there are still novels by him which haven’t been translated into English. He is really a very good novelist.

It’s truly worthwhile, and this goes for many regions. The southern region of Kerala where they write in Malayalam — there’s remarkable literary production there, and we just see so little of it.

My inclination was to suggest Chile.  Here’s why this country of below 18 million people is nonetheless a fierce literary contender:

1. Pablo Neruda was one of the two or three best poets of the latter part of the twentieth century.   His Canto general is not his best poetic work but as a general statement of the history and underlying unity of the New World it is unpar...

‘Israel’s high court placed the fate of the Palestinian village Susiya and its 340 residents in the hands of defense minister Avigdor Lieberman on Monday, leaving it to him to decide whether the army will demolish nearly half its structures, mostly ramshackle dwellings. On Monday, the court punted a petition the village had submitted with Rabbis for Human Rights requesting that it compel Israel’s occupation administration to recognize the legality of structures that Palestinians had built without permits from the army. What Exactly Is the U.S. Military Plotting in Africa? David Icke latest headlines

‘It’s rare to hear one top military commander publicly badmouth another, call attention to his faults, or simply point out his shortcomings. Despite a seemingly endless supply of debacles from strategic setbacks to quagmire conflicts since 9/11, the top brass rarely criticize each other or, even in retirement, utter a word about the failings of their predecessors or successors. Think of it as the camouflage wall of silence. You may loathe him. You may badmouth him behind closed doors. You may have secretly hoped for his career to implode. But publicly point out failures? That’s left to those further down the chain of command. And yet that’s effectively exactly what newly installed U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) chief, General Thomas Waldhauser, did earlier this year in a statement to the Senate Arms Services Committee (SASC). It’s just that no one, almost certainly including Waldhauser himself, seemed to notice or recognize it for the criticism it was, including the people tasked with oversight of military operations and those in the media.’ Read more: What Exactly Is the U.S. Military Plotting in Africa?

We Can’t Look Away: The Joy of Watching Donald Trump's Epic Presidential Trainwreck David Icke latest headlines

‘Donald Trump’s campaign and his takeover of the Republican Party are the political equivalents of a car accident. The American corporate news media—and many among the public, on both the left and the right—are participating in an act of political rubbernecking. They are transfixed by the skid marks on the road and the broken bodies lying nearby. Liberal schadenfreude is also compelling; the apparent implosion of the Republican Party under the boot heel of Donald Trump is transfixing. The headlines provide ample evidence of these raw pleasures. They read, “Donald Trump is destroying the Republican Party,” “Republicans are Plotting an Intervention,” “Is Donald Trump throwing his campaign?” and that he is causing a “freak-out” by pushing the GOP to its “breaking point.”’ Read more: We Can’t Look Away: The Joy of Watching Donald Trump’s Epic Presidential Trainwreck

‘The most troubling aspect of the $400 million cash payment to Iran, is not the fact that the payment was made in cash. This can surely be explained by the US’s lack of a banking relationship with the heavily sanctioned Iran. Nor was it the fact that the payment was not reported to the US public. The White House can say it had no reason to report, what it claims was a small part of a larger (Iran-Nuclear weapons) settlement deal…that had already been made public months ago. New Eastern Outlook: Korea: And Who is the Provoker? "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

43534534534534In an earlier article, we have already quoted paragraph 49 of resolution No. 2270, in which the UN Security Council acknowledges the importance of maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and welcomes any efforts to avoid any actions that might lead to increased tension.

We are referring to it now, because very often, the mass media talks about “DPRK provocations”, representing the actions of the South as a mere response to them. But let us see which side contributes more to the increasing tensions.

Let’s start with the North. As examples of provocations, South Korean media often uses propaganda videos showing attacks on the US base in Guam by Musudan missiles, which should indicate that the North possesses real capabilities of launching missiles against the enemy, wherever it might be. Other videos show the testing of anti-ship and anti-tank missiles, the destruction of an American aircraft carrier, a B-2 strategic bomber and a MV-22 Osprey convertiplane, as well as the launch of a ballistic missile from a submarine. On June 24, a video showing a computer-simulated nuclear attack on the US emerged.

On July 9, North Korea test-launched a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM). The missile took off normally, but its further flight was most likely unsuccessful. The missile supposedly exploded in the air after having flown only a few kilometers. The previo...

Like many misunderstood breeds, the pup is often avoided by people simply out of fear. “He always gets overlooked as a dangerous or unapproachable dog,” says his owner, Michael Collins.

Luckily, the mailman isn’t afraid and often goes out of his way – even if he doesn’t have mail to deliver in the area – just to spend some time giving him affection. As you can view in the video below, the canine is incredibly appreciative of the extra attention.

Collins secretly recorded the footage of the two interacting when he noticed the pair’s friendship. As you can view for yourself, it’s pretty darn adorable.

An Unidentified Aussie Man Is Roaming The Wild, Teaching The Internet How To Survive Off-Grid [Watch] True Activist

That and, of course, the treasure trove of information he shares in his videos. Really, the man puts adventurers such as Bear Grylls to shame due to his decision to subsist with primitive technology, which means using only fire, sticks, stones, dirt, water and rocks to survive.

The unnamed man writes in the ‘About’ section of his website that primitive technology involves creating things out in the woods – away from the relative comforts of modern-day equipment and tools. The key, apparently, is to determine what can be created without modern technology, the way...

Santiago: Education, the most powerful instrument in the struggle against exclusion and discrimination, is still elusive for indigenous people in Latin America, who remain the most disadvantaged segment of the population despite their wide presence in the region.

Recognition of the growing need to provide greater access to quality education for indigenous people, which respects cultural differences and local native traditions, is still far from translating into real, long-term public policies, the mayor of the Chilean municipality of Tirúa, Adolfo Millabur, told IPS.

In Chile, for example, “everyone expresses a willingness, but this isn’t put into practice,” said Millabur, whose municipality, 685 km south of Santiago, is located in the region of La Araucanía, home to nearly half of the Mapuche population, the country’s largest indigenous community.

Korryn Gaines Shot By Police After Hour-Long Standoff In Her Home True Activist

korryn-gaines-e1470164217813

A 23-year-old mother was shot dead recently after an hour stand-off in her home with police. Korryn Gaines barricaded herself in the house with a shotgun, allegedly firing two shots towards police that resulted in police shooting and killing her as well as wounding her 5-year-old son.

Reportedly, police were only coming to arrest Gaines on an outstanding warrant for not having a legal license plate on her vehicle. Instead, she had a cardboard sign that read “Any government official who compromises this pursuit of happiness and right to travel will be held criminally responsible and fined, as this is a natural right and freedom.” The car was also unregistered and uninsured – illegal in the state of Maryland (and every other state in the country).

While she was pulled over, Gaines allegedly stated that the cops were trying to “steal her car” and would have to “murder her” to get her out of the vehicle. Officers pulled her out of the car while she shouted “record this” to the cr...

Forgotten Origin: Cancer is a Gift (Part 3) "IndyWatch Feed National"

8,6,4,3,2,2 ⏌ (Cancer is a Gift-Part 3)

By Steven Strong

Fifteen months ago my wife was knocking on heavenâŹ"s door, and according to all the medical experts, it was a one-way ticket. Her blood cancer count was over 670,000, the spread of cancers were so large and numerous her stomach had been squashed âŹÜpancake flat,âŹ" and at best the oncologist felt she had a few months left.

Within four months of being âŹÜsung to deathâŹ" with a prognosis of Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma, the two main cancers and entourage of smaller off-spring had vanished, her cancer count is firmly established under the bar set at twelve and the oncologists now refer to my wife as the âŹSmiracle patient.⏠In the previous two articles we have proven through science, logic and the lack of any alternative effective âŹÜmainstreamâŹ" medication, that the Medicinal Cannabis Oil was the primary agent in her recovery. There is absolutely no doubt as to its main role in fighting and killing the cancers spread throughout her body. The results of her last six blood tests, which are spread over nine months have been supplied in the title. Knowing that every person on the planet has at least one cancer cell in their blood and at the ready to implant and multiply once the conditions are favourable, her last two scores of two are better than over 99% of the general population.

However, there is a lot more to DelâŹ"s recovery than this precious Oil. I still remember the day the oncologist âŹÜpointed the boneâŹ" at my wife trying desperately to extinguish any hope of living, and my trip to Nimbin the day they tried to extinguish the mainstay of the Hippocratic oath, âŹSphysician heal thyself.” When purchasing the first of many vials, I asked the gentleman assisting what were her chances. He began his reply by first setting out a backdrop and last choice scenario. Inevitably the decision to try Medicinal Cannabis Oil is the final course of action...

Environmental Activist Bikes 4,700 Miles Across The US To Prove That Sustainable Living Is Possible [WATCH] True Activist

food-waste

Each year, the world produces over 2.2 billion tons of waste. According to The World Counts, 99% of everything we buy is trashed within 6 months. Most of this waste is tossed in landfills, where it can remain fully intact for hundreds of years. The 100 million tons of plastic produced each year, 10 million tons of which end up in the ocean, kill birds and sea-life in troves. We also waste hundreds of gallons of water, all which takes energy and resources that produce a lot of pollution.

In an effort to show that it is very possible to reduce the amount of waste we produce, environmental activist Rob Greenfield created his Sustainable Living Series that spans 5 episodes and covers his 4,700-mile bicycle trip across the United States.  Greenfield is the creator of The Food Waste Fiasco, which campaigns to end food waste and world hunger. He is also the host of Free Ride on Discovery Channel and donates 100% of all of his media profits to grassroots nonprofits.

California Breaks Solar Record By Generating 8,030 Megawatts Of Electricity For Six Million Homes True Activist

California Renewable Energy

By: Lipika Mudgal   The state of California in the United States is often referred to as the ‘golden state’ as it is believed to be the richest of all the states due to the economic viability of the area. For the past few years, renewable energy has been produced to supply clean and affordable energy there. Now, California has broken all the solar generation records because of it.

According to California’s Independent Solar Operators Corporation (ISO), 8,030 megawatts of large-scale solar power was generated at 1:06 p.m. on July 12, nearly doubling the amount of solar energy produced in mid-2014, and nearly 2,000 megawatts higher than in May 2015.

This new record was set solely by large solar plants. It does not take into consideration 537,637 smaller solar panel arrays installed on private homes and business’ rooftops. According to San Francisco Gate, that’s enough energy to power more than 6 million households.

“This solar production record demonstrates that California is making significant strides forward in connecting low carbon resources to the grid in meeting the state’s goal of reaching 33 pe...

70th Anniversary Of The Battle Of Athens: WWII Veterans Took Back Their Town From Corrupt Politicians True Activist

athensbattle

Upon returning from the war, GI’s found that the town had elected Paul Cantrell, a democratic candidate, for sheriff. While fraud was heavily suspected, there was no way to prove it. The sheriff enacted heavy taxes and fines for every person who was arrested, booked, incarcerated and released. The more “human transactions” the more money the government received.

Deputies began to arrest people on fraudulent charges, and often. They were known to routinely board busses and go through each passenger and arrest people for drunkenness (even if they were not). Some weekends saw over 115 arrests, even though it was a very small town. Collecting money from allowing roadhouses (pubs, bars, etc) to stay open was so much more profitable than closing them down altogether, that it became common knowledge in Tennessee that Athens was a “wide open” town during Prohibition times.

When election time rolled around on August 1st, 1946, voters rushed to ballots in record numbers to vote out the corruption in politics.  But major voter suppression, such as roughing up all the GI’s who stood guard or refusing to allow people to vote made the soldiers snap.  After a black man named Gillespie was shot in the back for legally trying to cast...

Between Lambs and Lions is a political thriller, set against a dystopian future not far from now. The American constitution is null and void and with it the Star Spangled Banner assigned to a museum. One man stands against the mighty totalitarian state of The New Republic. One politician, Daniel Alesso, campaigns against the oppressive New Republic, challenging the President as the last remaining honest face in American history. As the old saying goes, “Truth is Treason in an Empire of Lies.”

Between Lambs and Lions is a modern take on the story of Daniel and the Lion's Den. The short proof of concept starring Paterson Joseph (The Beach, Babylon and Peep Show) and Finbar Lynch (Foyles War and Game of Thrones) shows Daniel beginning his journey to challenge the President on his quest for total control over the New Republic, but not before being threatened to remain quiet.

Police in Chicago have yet again confirmed that the state has little to no regard for Black lives. Paul O’Neal a recent high school graduate, was shot and killed during a foot chase after he was fleeing police in an allegedly stolen vehicle. The young man was unarmed and greatly out numbered.

Ken Patterson of blackmattersus reports that according to the Chicago Tribune:

“O’Neal was shot on Thursday at about 7:30 p.m. by a Chicago police officer who suspected him of car theft. Reports say O’Neal crushed an alleged stolen car into two police cruisers and fled the scene. Dashboard camera footage disclosed that two officers shot at the Black teen while he was yet in the car.”

Patterson elaborates that “O’Neal sensing danger got out of the car and began to run for his life. A third police officer chased him and shot him in the back, killing him like a dog. Apparently, the officer aimed the shot to kill the Black teen. Paul O’Neal died of gunshots wounds at the back.”

Nearly 11 months after a mob lynched Mohammed Akhlaq in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh on suspicion of having killed a cow, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has finally broken his silence on the violence that ‘gau rakshaks’ – ‘cow protectors’ – have unleashed in different parts of the country.

“I feel really angry at the way some people have opened shops in the name of cow protection. I have seen that some people commit anti-social activities through the night, but act as cow protectors by day”, the prime minister told an audience at a ‘town hall’ style interaction with an invited audience in Delhi on Saturday.

While Modi was careful not to refer to any one incident in particular, the trigger for his remarks appears to be the recent shocker in Una, Gujarat, where a group of Dalit men were brutally flogged by upper caste vigilantes for skinning a dead cow. A video recording has relayed the crime to every home across the country, to devastating effect. It has stoked Dalit anger and upset efforts by the Bharatiya Janata Party to attract Dalit votes in the run up to crucial...

A Maori activist’s fight for his people after being accused of running a paramilitary training camp in New Zealand.

Al Jazeera, August 4, 2016

In 2007 New Zealand police arrested charismatic Maori leader Tame Iti and others in anti-terrorist raids after a period of surveillance.

In a long trial, Iti and three other people (the “Urewera Four”) were accused of running a terrorist training camp and of being members of a criminal group. The high court found them not guilty of terrorism but they were jailed for firearms offences. The case was the culmination of 170 years of conflict between the New Zealand Crown and the Ngai Tuhoe tribe, who had suffered appalling injustice including the dispossession of their land.

Filmed over seven years, Iti fights to clear his name and in a surprising turn, the Crown apologises to the Ngai Tuhoe for the historical oppression. This is an extraordinary film about a clash of cultures and indigenous people reconciling with the colonial power.

Likely, B.C. – Things are back too normal at the Mt Polley mine in Likely.

This following a blockade by the Secwepemc Women’s Warrior Society yesterday.

“There were a few activists that gathered at the entrance to the access road to the mine yesterday,” said Imperial Metals spokesperson Steve Robertson.

“Their numbers grew throughout the day. There wasn’t much in the way of blockade activity until late in the afternoon when they were not allowing vehicles to go in and were slowing down vehicles that were going out. But that lasted for a short period of time and the activists were all gone by early evening.”

And though it temporarily kept around 100 workers from starting their afternoon shift, he noted “there was no interruption in the operation and everybody was able to get to work safely.”

United Steelworkers president Paul French said his members were eventually able to detour their away around the blockade and start their shifts.

Secwepemc Women’s Warrior Society spokesperson Kanahus Freedom said the blockade was in protest to the provincial government’s decision to allow the mine to return to full production in June.

She also warned her group will be heard from again.

“As long as Imperial Metals and the government that backs them continue to devastate our lands with no accountability, we will take whatever action necessary to defend out lands,” said Freedom.

500 Year Old Map Was Discovered That Shatters The “Official” History Of The Planet

Human history is quite an enigma. We know so little, and much of what we think we know seems to be highly questionable in the wake of new evidence, as well as pre-existing information that challenges our current understanding of the world.

Our world is no stranger to unexplained mystery, and there are numerous examples of verified phenomenon, ancient monuments, books, teachings, understandings and more that lack any explanation and counter what we’ve already been taught. We are like a race with amnesia, able to put together small bits and pieces of our history yet unable to provide any sort of verified explanation. There are still many missing...

Sgt. Never had the Beatles emerged with such a brace of high-quality songs.

Fishing World, 2 August 2016:

THE Clarence River port of Yamba in Northern NSW has been proposed for a huge development that would see it potentially become one of the country's biggest ports.

The $12 billion takeover would see about 36 sq. km of infrastructure development along the Clarence covering approximately 27 per cent of the estuary system, according to the No Yamba Mega Port Facebook page.

River dredging would be required to a depth of 18m from the mouth through to Harwood Bridge with the complete removal of Turkey, Gourd and Palm Islands.

The project would also require the removal of two of NSW's most iconic fishing breakwalls, Iluka and Yamba walls, which lie on the North and South Banks of the Clarence River.

Earth First! Newswire: In Support of Spike Board as Blockade Tactic "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

from Warrior Publications

in-support-of-spike-boards-in-blocadesOn August 4, 2016, a land defender was injured during a blockade action at the Mount Polley mine site in central BC when a driver, reportedly a worker for Imperial Metals, drove through the blockade. The blockade was comprised of people standing in the roadway to stop traffic, never a good idea in my opinion. The fact is, people blockading vehicles will always be dependent on the driver not forcing their way through for the simple reason that a group of people cannot physically stop a car or truck.

Some blockades will inevitably be comprised of people standing in the path of traffic. As I mentioned, I don’t think it’s a good tactic. But in some situations I understand why it’s used. For example, many protests in urban environments will simply stop at intersections to disrupt traffic. There have also been numerous highway blockades carried out by Black Lives Matter protesters, in which gr...

The Allied Land Defenders including youth, Elders and women temporarily blockaded the mine site for the day, allowing workers to leave but not re-enter. In this process, an Imperial Metals employee attempted to violently breach the line of Elders, women and children at the mine entrance with their vehicle. Sacheen of Ancestral Pride, in an attempt to stop the vehicle was herself assaulted and sustained serious injuries and was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. "IndyWatch Feed Tas": Dr Kevin Bonham: Senate Reform Performance Review Part 1 "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

The results of the Senate election are all in and so it is timely to review how the new Senate system performed in full detail.  No system should be expected to perform flawlessly on its first attempt.  However, the new system has generally exceeded the expectations of its most ardent supporters (save any who supported it for the wrong reasons) and made its opponents' pre-election arguments look very silly indeed.

The final savings provisions were that any vote including a single 1 above the line would be formal (even if it included two 2s, or only a 1 and nothing else), and that any below-the-line vote would be formal if the voter correctly numbered from 1-6 with each of these numbers once and once only.

There was relatively little difference in the objections raised to the two models, and indeed many objectors to the first model continued making the same objections to the second as if nothing had changed.  Some of the objections made were:

* that the system would advantage the Coalition by making it easy for it to win a majority
* that the...

"IndyWatch Feed Vic": "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne": Black Mark: Three Exhibitions in Brunswick "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

“Rosencrantz: Whatever became of the moment when one first knew about death? There must have been one. A moment. In childhood. When it first occurred to you that you don’t go on forever. Must have been shattering. Stamped into one’s memory. And yet, I can’t remember it.” (Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guilderstern are Dead)

There are currently two dark exhibitions on at the Counihan Gallery in Brunswick: “Exhume” by Clare Humphries and “An Apprehension of Mortality” by Bruce Dickson. ‘Dark’ in both their colours and in the theme of mortality.

There is often an element of memento mori in the genre of still life but Humphries emphasises it by using personal objects of her deceased family members. The hand-burnishing of the linocuts softens the usual hard edges of the print allowing for subtle gradation of light to dark. The objects that Humphries depicts glow against the blackness of the paper.

Anyone complaining that art students don’t know how to draw doesn’t know that there are lecturers like Humphries. Clare Humphries lectures in Drawing and Printmedia at the VCA and the technical skill in these prints is amazing.

Of course, anyone complaining about today’s art students would point at Bruce Dickson’s exhibition at the Counihan. Dickson has more light than dark but it is a slack light, vaguely suggesting something. There are only three works in the exhibition, an “installation/sculpture” called “threshold”, where some paper that had been dipped in pigment hangs in sculptural manner, and two loops of video of some gauze-like material blowing around. Even when I appreciated the existential vibrations, in Dickson’s video loop “towards stillness,” I found the actual video annoying because of the inelegant arrangement of the three pieces of cloth kept distracting me.

Further along Sydney Road at Soma Gallery, a shopfront gallery is “Bush Nighmarez” by Lou Herrod. Demons with gum leaf hor...

Here are the answers with discussion for this Weekend’s Quiz. The information provided should help you work out why you missed a question or three! If you haven’t already done the Quiz from yesterday then have a go at it before you read the answers. I hope this helps you develop an understanding of modern monetary theory (MMT) and its application to macroeconomic thinking. Comments as usual welcome, especially if I have made an error.

Question 1:

If the national accounts of a nation reveal that its external surplus is equivalent to 2 per cent of GDP and the private domestic sector is saving overall 3 per cent of GDP then we would also observe:

(a) A fiscal deficit equal to 1 per cent of GDP.

(b) A fiscal surplus equal to 1 per cent of GDP.

(c) A fiscal deficit equal to 5 per cent of GDP.

(d) A fiscal surplus equal to 5 per cent of GDP.

The answer is Option (a) – A fiscal deficit equal to 1 per cent of GDP.

This question requires an understanding of the sectoral balances that can be derived from the National Accounts. But it also requires some understanding of the behavioural relationships within and between these sectors which generate the outcomes that are captured in the National Accounts and summarised by the sectoral balances.

Refreshing the balances (again) – we know that from an accounting sense, if the external sector overall is in deficit, then it is impossible for both the private domestic sector and government sector to run surpluses. One of those two has to also be in deficit to satisfy the accounting rules.

The important point is to understand what behaviour and economic adjustments drive these outcomes.

To refresh your memory the sectoral balances are derived as follows. The basic income-expenditure model in macroeconomics can be viewe...

"IndyWatch Feed Nznews": The Dim-Post: Notes on the New Zealand conservative tradition "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

Rob Hosking has had a few columns in the NBR (paywalled) advancing the theory that:

because most or all writing about New Zealand’s political history was written either from a pro-Labour perspective or, if it criticised Labour it was from the Left, it means there is a colossal ignorance about half the New Zealand political scene

Hosking argues that the left does not understand the ‘traditions of New Zealand conservatism’, which makes the left blind to National’s strengths and renders themselves unable to counter their arguments. And he recommends several books people could read, like Gustafson’s books about Muldoon and Holyoake, or Michael Bassett’s The State in New Zealand to deeper understand the traditions of kiwi conservatism.

Firstly, I am guilty of the lack of perspective he’s writing about, and I plan to finally getting around to reading some of those books – the Gustafson ones especially. (I feel like I wasted enough time reading Bassett’s ridiculous tantrums and rants in The Dominion to ever trouble myself to pick up one of his books.)

But, secondly, while I agree that not many left-wing MPs or activists are familiar with this New Zealand conservative tradition Rob is talking about, I doubt many of them have read many books about left-wing traditions either. And I simultaneously doubt that many National Party MPs or activists have read many of the books on Rob’s reading list. Most MPs read a lot but they tend not to get through many weighty books, mostly because of the endless reams of other crap they have to read. And I’m not convinced that many people on the right share Rob’s adherence to this tradition. Rodney Hide, who writes a column every winter about how global warming is obviously wrong, because he is cold, seems to be a greater influence. This i...

Last week one of my Public Law students asked me whether it was true that the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) could demand a person’s name on the Census form. The issue has been all over social media in recent days.

Collecting names on Census night isn’t new – but people are concerned that the ABS will now be retaining peoples’ names, whereas previously it destroyed identifying information before analysing the data. Retaining identifying information that can be linked to Census records has potentially significant privacy implications. Although the data provided to the ABS is protected by robust secrecy provisions in the Census and Statistics Act 1905 (the Act), questions have been asked about the security of the storage of data and the potential for its misuse.

It’s difficult to call into question the value of the Census – it provides essential information for all levels of government, to facilitate the planning of services from hospitals, transport and infrastructure and schools to homelessness services, libraries and services for migrants and refugees. But does the ABS in fact have the power to require people to provide their name on the Census form? An argument can be made that the ABS has no legal authority to do so – because the Act only permits the collection of ‘statistical information’ for the purpose of the Census, and names are not ‘statistical information’.

As a lawyer and law teacher, I would never suggest that anyone refuse to fill in their name on their Census form or refuse it to...

"IndyWatch Feed Enviro.pacific": Act Now! blogs: Pomio landowners petition against SABL logging "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

Landowners in the Pomio district of East New Britain have petitioned the government [see pdf file below] calling on them not to authorise logging in a new concession area on their their land as part of the Sigite-Mukus Integrated Rural Development Project.

The landowners say they have already suffered from logging in three concession areas, totalling 42,400 hectares and they are now being pressured to allow further logging in another 13,000 hectares known as the Unung Sigite concession.

The Sigite-Mukus Integrated Rural Development Project was set up in 2008 as part of the controversial nation-wide land grab using fraudulently issued Special Purpose Business and Agriculture Leases (SABLs).

The landowners say they have “grievous concerns” for their livelihoods and do not want any further logging. They say the SABL leases over their land were acquired unlawfully, have robbed them of their birth rights and threaten a “catastrophic genocide” in the future as they are for 99-years.

Malaysian logging company, Rimbunan Hijau, holds the SABL leases, which people say were “acquired in very strange circumstances” and without their consent. They say logging has already caused “so much environmental damage” and accuse RH of using a “heavy police presence” to “rob people of their customary land, resources and heritage”.

RH recently sent a delegation, headed by former PNG Forest Authority Managing Director Kanawi Pouru, to mee...

CLRC-Words-800x445

Serah Aupong | EMTV news

The Constitutional Law Review Commission (CLRC) has raised questions on seabed mining, in relation to other laws in the country.

CLRC Secretary, Dr. Eric Kwa, said with the passing of the Maritime Zone Delimitation Act, the government now has the challenge to see how that will progress with the issuing of seabed mining licence.

Dr. Kwa said the Maritime Zone Delimitation Act was passed last year but is yet to come into effect.

“In that particular law, they (government) now can declare marine protected areas.” he said.

He questions how this will sit within the government’s pursuit of seabed mining and its exploration licences.

“How does that work with the government also trying to declare an area a marine protected area?” Dr. Kwa asked.

The PNG government has granted the world’s first seabed mining licence to a Canadian company, Nautilus Minerals, and mining is set to begin in 2018.

“Current licence holders will say they have pre-existing rights. The challenge is that we as a government need to deal with this new law while pursuing sea bed mining,” he said.

Another law that Kwa says needs consideration is the Fisheries Act, which covers the fisheries industry in the.........

I’d set my phone to remind me this morning at a quarter past nine – 8.15 am Japanese Standard Time – to mark the 71st anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima by the USA.

I sat for a minute in silence. Life went on around me without a perceptible ripple. I thought I should spend another couple of minutes making my minute into a social event. (I believe that the opening ceremony in Rio fell silent for a minute – but I wasn’t watching the telly.)

So much fuss is rightly made here of the number of Australians who died in a single day on the Somme in 1915. But that appalling tragedy involved men who were combatants – they had been sent by their government to kill and, as it happened, be killed. The people who died at Hiroshima, instantly or in the long agony of radiation disease, were largely civilians – babies at the breast, old women on their deathbeds, cooks, poets and potters –  going about their ordinary lives in the city of two rivers, as much as life could be ordinary in that country at that time. And the Hiroshima anniversary creates hardly a blip on the Australian public radar these days.

The horror of the atom bomb took a while to be generally known, and was overshadowed by the relief of the war ending. What struck me this morning was that my generation is the first to be born into a world where nuclear weapons had already been used to kill people, the first to be born after what scientists now call Year Zero (because radiation dating has to be calculated differently after 1945), the first to live with the knowledge that human beings have the power to wipe ourselves out, and so – for many of us – the first to spend a lot of energy keeping that knowledge away from the front of our minds. The temptation to think small, to look after number one, to cultivate one’s garden, to turn away from the suffering of other people, to live in a bubble, became significantly stronger 71 years ago today.

A minute of silence goes a...

The Occupation in Chicago That’s Building a Community Free from Racist Policing and Prisons:

An article on Chicago protests against police brutality:

“When Martin Luther King Jr. moved to Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood in 1966, he advocated for fair housing for Black communities, sparking fires of social change in the North. 50 years later, at an anniversary march commemorating King’s “Chicago Freedom Summer” campaign for housing, economic and racial justice, the West Side community showed it still burns with that passion.

After that July 20 demonstration, young, Black activists occupied an abandoned lot across from Homan Square, a police “black site” where more than 7,000 detainees were “disappeared”—over 80 percent of them Black—many of whom were tortured and denied legal representation. The encampment, dubbed “Freedom Square,” sits in sharp contrast to Homan Square: Free clothing, food, activities and books are provided to revitalize a community beaten down by the police force.

In this neighborhood police brutality is not some distant concept, says Bella Bahhs, a member of the #LetUsBreathe Collective, a youth-based organization created in response to police killings, and one of several groups organizing the occupation. According to Bahhs, community members approach activists nearly every day with tales of torture experienced in the Homan facility.

“[The police] are state militias designed to oppress Black people, poor people and marginalized people,” says Damon Williams, the 23-year-old co-founder of the #LetUsBreathe Collective.

The Freedom Square occupation is one of a series of similar demonstrations in the Movement for Black Lives, most recently an occupation outside of New York City Hall, which helped pressure Police Chief Bill Bratton into resigning Wednesday. On the other side o...

When the reporters asked why it took her so long to get to the finishing line, she replied, ‘I don’t want to sound like I’m a sore loser, but I think those other women were using their arms.’

Do it for Mon Amie, who had a most unnatural life.

“With what looked like seizures, little Mon Amie was left to struggle and flail about for days.” Ever heard of chicken hatching projects? Throughout Australia, eggs set to hatch in two to three days are set up in incubators at early learning centres, schools and nursing homes and onlookers wait for the chicks to emerge. Mon Amie was one of those chicks.

When she hatched it was obvious something was wrong, but with no one willing to foot the vet bill she was left to suffer for days. One caring student took it upon themselves to usher her to Edgar’s Mission where she was given the veterinary care she desperately needed, but nothing could be done to save her.

Mon Amie, like many others, hatched with a debilitating condition. She didn’t get to experience the comforting bond of motherhood. Her mother didn’t cluck to her through the shell and she chirp back, or lovingly turn her every day as nature intended. Instead she hatched in an unnatural setting, reduced to a teaching aide, to fleeting entertainment.

Join us in standing with Mon Amie and sign our petition to ban chicken hatching projects.

"IndyWatch Feed Nznews": The Hinterland: ‘Something undefined’ – Lydia Davis "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

Can’t and Won’t by Lydia Davis (Farrar Straus& Giroux) 2014

I mentioned Lydia Davis in a review of a collection of James Wood’s book reviews a couple of years back – I’d never heard of Davis, which is perhaps not surprising because my knowledge of fiction writers these days is pretty scant.

Trying, slowly, to rectify that, because as I put it in that earlier piece, the ‘rich, slow joy’ of reading is something I miss,  and I forget I miss it until I remember to actually do it.

This is a collection of short stories, jottings, dreams and almost-jokes. Of the latter, one,  ‘Negative Emotions’, had me chuckling with delight for ages after reading it.

There is often a tone of self-doubt – a knowing, ironic self-doubt, but it is a knowingness and irony which is not there for a smart-alecky effect. There is always a clear emotion behind such pieces, a sense Davis is taking the reader into her confidence rather than keeping us at bay.

One story, headed, ‘Not Interested’, begins

‘I’m simply not interested in reading this book. I was not interested in reading the last one I tried, either I’m less and less interested in reading any of the books I have, though they are reasonably good, I suppose.’

The way that sentence tails off into ‘I suppose’ is a nice touch.

Or:

‘Life is too serious to me to go on writing… Writing is too often about people who can’t manage. Now I have become one of those people. I am one of those people. What should I do, instead of writing that people who can’t manage...

He first joined some very Grand Tourists in Italy such as Viscount Duncannon, Earl of Sandwich and accompanied them to the Levant. He spent 4 amazing years in Constantinople (1738-42), absorbing the visual pleasures of the exotic East. "The Turk", as he called himself, only adopted his Oriental costume and beard in Constantinople, where he painted expatriate residents and scenes of everyday life in the Ottoman Empire. Then he continued being The Turk wherever he travelled across Europe. The exactness of his eastern costumes in his portraits presumably recorded what both Turkish citizens wore, and what members of the Western merchant community wore while they lived amongst the locals.

His portrayal of life in the Ottoman Empire in the mid C18th, and of his fashionable European sitters in Turkish attire, in some way inspired the C19th taste for Orientalism. In his day he was one of Europe’s most sought-after portraitists, worth high prices and a loyal, international clientele. From delicate lace and silks to exotic turbans and furs, Liotard’s depictions of textiles showed his impressive command of textiles, decorative details and a sense of fashion.

Imperial Metals and the BC government claim to have the support of the Secwepemc, but in reality rely on select political figures and elected officials that do not represent the interests of the Secwepemc people or constitute their traditional sovereignty. “The DIA chiefs of the Soda Creek and Williams Lake Indian Bands have no jurisdiction or authority to support the re-opening of the Mount Polley mine,” states April Thomas, Secwepemculecw Grassroots Movement, who lobbied and presented to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) this past April regarding human and indigenous rights abuses on Secwepemc territory at the h...

Corporate Australia: ABS forced to defend Census website security "IndyWatch Feed National"

Insecure encryption raises eyebrows.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has been forced to answer questions about the security of its online Census website after it was revealed to be using an insecure and deprecated form of encryption to protect the sensitive personal details of the nation’s citizens.

Tests of the strength of encryption used on the main Census website, first highlighted by security consultant and software engineer Ben Dechrai, reveal the website supports the SHA-1 hashing algorithm long considered to be insecure.

SHA is a component of a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate that is used to prevent the modification of data.

All major web browser operators have said they will stop accepting SHA-1-based signatures by next January. Internet Explorer owner Microsoft recently said it would bring that date forward to September 2016 after research showed real-world ‘collision attacks’ could open the door to digital signature forgeries even before 2017.

The Australian Signals Directorate deprecated SHA-1 from its list of approved cryptographic algorithms in December...

One Step Off The Grid: Household battery storage costs: So near and yet so far "IndyWatch Feed National"

RenewEconomy

The main points:

  • SolarQuotes has done a great job putting together data on 28 different household storage systems on the market to date. The data shows a median capital cost of $9000 or $1800 per usable KWh (kilowatt hour), which translates to $0.39 of cost for every delivered KWh of electricity. We expect competition to really drive price. We think the installed base is less than 5000 grid connected systems, but based on Enphase orders expect that to explode to over 50,000 within the next 18 months.
  • EV battery costs on the other hand are about A$250 KWh of headline capacity or say A$350 KWh of usable capacity. That is just 20% of the cost of household storage. We think inverters and the supply chain account for most of the difference. We think purpose built stationary energy lithium storage could end up cheaper than for EVs because of different chemistry, less constrained form factors, and ultimately greater scale. The question is whether EV battery costs, which themselves are falling quickly, can be pushed through to installed residential costs.
  • Using EV costs on demand renewable energy wind+lithium has an LCOE of maybe A$160 MWh broadly comparable with say CST. In my view the global expansion of lithium makes it a much lower risk technology than CST, at least at this point of time. In addition there are other possibilities such as putting the storage at the fringe of the grid (behind the household meter).
  • From a policy perspective it seems that some policies that incentives EVs will also progress stationary energy lithium storage. We think that would be a good thing.

Does lithium storage energy cost $50 MWh, $100MWh, or $400MWh?

Today you get one answer, but always there is someone saying that at the “end of the rainbow” there will b...
